when you say switch pack do you mean the phone switch pack? or is the module inside MY14?

What year switch pack?
IIRC the newer ECU relies on comms from the BCU
My thoughts were that the older BCU didn't know anything about the heated wheel and were therefore not compatible.
The older wheel ECU's did not rely on comms, they were just hard wired switched.
Perhaps there is a software update available now to allow the older BCM to recognise the heated wheel ECU?
If not then it's probably a case of fitting older ones like I did.
I ended up resorting to eBay.
Hope this helps.

Switchpack is the new switch unit that you have replaced that physically has the heated wheel switch on it
The module inside the wheel is the heated wheel ECU

the new wheel was of 2015 range rover sport. I was told was compatible.... it looks like it clearly was not! my d4 is 2012.

so if I get the part number can I just simply replace the new unit for the old unit?

That would be too easy - you can't buy the old ECU new.
Best bet is to try eBay or perhaps there is a software update that might work for you.
Consider if you go down the route of old ECU then you may or may not need an older switchpack
