D4 SDV6 Long Term Storage
Hello Chaps.
For lots of reasons I do not 'need' my D4 Commercial right now and as it is mint condition (my opinion of course), and as no one will part X it at a sensible offer, and selling it is too much hassle, I am going to store it and run a lease car for a couple of years (just suits my business plans right now).
The old girl can come out of hibernation at the end of this period. It is the just the best for towing my track car
Just been serviced (local Indy), 4 new tyres (well 8 months old) and will be polished, under a dust cover and parked up in the dry.
I will get the chance to turn her over so I was thinking every 6 or 8 weeks just run her up temperature. Taking it off its wheels is not an option......... but is there anything else worth doing?
At 5 years old and 88k miles she is fine fettle but it is the original battery (which shows no signs of fading), change that maybe?
Here she is just after being machine polished a while back......... and she sits as good as that today (when I get round to washing her) (no garage forecourt cheap £7 washes here).
Any thoughts in taking good care of the old girl gratefully received.
Have a good weekend."Track day running - Don't put your foot back on the accelerator until your absolutely sure you don't have to take it off again"

Hate to point out the obvious but if you think peeps are offering too little for her now, it'll be a good chunk worse in a couple of years time. Especially with the hysteria over diesels.
Just saying.

I get you on that but my decision is also based on not (never) buying a D5. Just hate the look and the Commercial prices are a joke (my opinion again). I have had several through the years.
So if I wanted another one I would end up buying other peoples problems (in some form D3 or D4).
I'm lucky in the sense that what she is worth now, and then in two years, is not an issue. Giving it away to some muppet salesman just annoys me It got 'put through' the Company's books and has a net worth (according to HMRC anyway) of zero
But noted "Track day running - Don't put your foot back on the accelerator until your absolutely sure you don't have to take it off again"

no point putting a new battery on before storage. Do that when you want to use it.
Best to hook up a CTEK or disconnect battery.
I would worry that the turbo VVT actuator would seize up.
Pump all tyres up to at least 40psi for storage, if not more on a LR

You're gonna upset DG with that talk.
Who said we have to be rational. I've sold cars too soon and kept cars too long, there is no ideal solution.
Worth putting a trickle charger on a timer, say on for 6 hours once a week?

A couple of years, mmmmmm.
I wouldn't leave it stood on its tyres for that long without at least periodically moving it. You could end up with flat spotted tyres over that timescale.
You might have to jack it up and use axle stands but more knowledgeable people will advise.
Will at the very least need a trickle charger and I'd be tempted to place something inside to capture any inherent moisture and prevent things from going mouldy. Mods:

why waste money and energy on a timer, when the CTEK does it all for you

I'd offer to look after her but it looks like it gets washed more than once a year, I would hate to have to brake the habit of a lifetime. Plus I'd have to be very careful to keep her out of frame in Road Trip '18 pics. You know how these pesky LRs like to spoil a pic of a pretty view.

Humm. Wonder if that had water is the carpets. or once fungus starts...
I put a car with leather into a ventilated garage for 8 months. The only issue inside was the odd spiders web around the rear window.
It wasn't over cleaned inside spreading bacteria around though.

Unless it’s been done recently, I’d swap the coolant as well (even if it does claim a 5 year life )2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
2015 - 2017: 2 x D4
2017 to date: FFRR SDV8
2023 to date: FL2 as a second car
2021 to date: Hinckley built ‘14 Triumph Trophy 1200
2022 to date: Hinckley built ‘14 Triumph Trophy 1200 & sidecar!

I take my D3 to Portugal regularly. Sometimes she is ybernating there for 2-3 months. I keep her on a trickle charger. Mostly this only charges a few hours per week [ put a kwh counter in between].
Then at least she'll start. The tyre pressure hase to be raised to around 5bar to preven flat parts , but put a note on the dash to remind you to bring it back to normal values before driving...
Further then that I had no problems. If you run it, use it for several hours. Dont let it run stationary on your drive !
But as other people said : better to sell it nog. Will only get worse I'm afraid..

If you run it don't do it at tick over, 2000rpm, no higher if not working to get every thing up to temperature and turbos operating.
Put some sachets of mouse poison in the engine compartment, they love electric cables
It is possible to put it into pre-delivery mode with an Iid tool if you have one, this is mainly to conserve the battery, but I would disconnect the battery it is a sorce of Fire, which brings us onto insurance!!!
Parking brake off of course It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

IMHO is a crazy idea, every excessively stopped car suffers, they are not designed for that!!!!...... but 2 years is going to be too much. I think it will end up destroyed, rubbers, seals, seals, moving parts, oils and other fluids ... there are many things to consider, much more than the electric and electronic section, the engine or the wheels ... I think it will be a total ruin !!!lost in translation!
