Does it need to know the change from 2 sockets down to one?

There is definitely the option to set it to 13 pin amongst others so I'd suspect yes

I can't find any voltage on my 12S socket with the engine and ignition off. I had hoped to charge the battery through this socket. Does it need to be enabled with IID tool or is it most likely it's just not connected?

On the 12 S socket you should have 12v constant - pin 4 , and 2 x 12v switched (Pin 6 for Fridge and Pin 2 for charging caravan battery)

Have a look here:

it is a genuine D4 towing loom fitted, or an aftermarket job?

Genuine fitting. Came with the car. However, car is second hand so no idea if it has ever worked!

If it came with the car how do you know its genuine? Have you looked in the left hand rear locker (as you look into the back of the car) - what does the towing loom connection look like - is it 2 grey plugs connected, or something spliced into the wiring loom?

Have you checked the fuses? They are in one of the main fuseboxes on a D4, as it doesnt have the little auxillary fuse block in the back like the D3 had.

Have a look in the handbook for fuse numbers and location

Thanks Al. Now away with work so will resume troubleshooting when I get back. From looking around, it all looks genuine - no nasty scotchlok connectors and stuff like that.

Wasn't even a fuse. One of the pairs of grey connectors wasn't connected! Connected the pair with a blue and a red wire and viola! 12.6V at the trailer socket.
