| D4 turbo - noise from left turbo |

I was hoping someone may have experience of this problem and ho hopefully the solution wasn’t to have a new turbo installed. When the car is cold and I rev to about 2000 revs there is a brief whine which sounds almost like a squealing pulley belt. The noise occurs before and up to 2000rpms. The noise goes away when the car is warm however I have had a restricted performance warning (red triangle) a few times. There is no excess smoke coming out or oil leaking. The noise is definitely coming from the left side of the car (primary turbo). The Indy looked at the car and said it was a turbo fault and the turbo was on its way out.
Is this the start of a failing turbo or could it be the actuator which could be remedied?
I took off the heat shields and sprayed Q20 where I think the actuator is hidden behind the turbo, but it hasn’t made a difference.
Any advice appreciated.

first read DTC codes to in point the problem as were would be some registered if you getting restricted perf
where are you located

Thanks Greg. Unfortunately I don’t have a fault code reader ....and am a bit out the way in South Africa. Will try get the exact code from the Indy..

It’s worth buying a code reader, you only need to use it a couple of times to get your money back if you go the cheap route and get something like an icarsoft at around £150 in the uk Joined the BMWX5 45e group

Thanks Dave - I will look into that.
1 question - if I get a reader and get the codes, where do I find the translation/meaning of the codes?
Does anyone know if the sticking actuator can be fixed on the D4? Assuming that is the problem.

When you say the left turbo, is that the secondary turbo you are on about, if so check your TSOV, its probably sticking/stuck. This turbo only comes in at the rpm your reporting and this TSOV valve stays shut you get the type of noise your reporting.
Check all the small vac pipes on the front of the engine to make sure they are all on, if so you need to check this valve out.
Its a common fault with it.

Hi - some further information and request for advice:
1. So I took the car to another mechanic, and on the way to them the restricted performance light came on (red triangle) and the car power was reduced... no smoke or noise though.
2. At the mechanic, the following error codes were evident - P22D2 - turbo charger turbine inlet valve stuck open; and P22CF -Turbine inlet valve control circuit - open
When starting the car again, and revving it to 2000 rpm quickly, the noise (whine) was evident for a second or two on the left hand side turbo - sitting in the car facing forward - which is the primary turbo.
From reading around, it seems that most people with these symptoms have an issue with the secondary (right side) turbo. This doesn't seem to be the case with my issue based on the above. I also don't have any noises or issues above 2800 rpm (when the 2nd turbo kicks in).
The mechanic suggested the following steps to remediate:
1. It is likely that the noise is coming from the manifold and may be solved by replacing the gasket. He doesn't recommend skimming the manifold as this can lead to cracks later on, but says the gasket will solve the noise.
2. The error messages are likely to be caused by a leak in one of the air pipes and he is going to do a vacuum test to prove, or the solenoids may need to be changed.
Does this sound about right?
Anyone have any views on the manifold skimming?
Should the CAT be checked and possibly removed as it may be blocked?

Hello Silverc:
I am experiencing the exact same problem with the turbo noise (whine) in the left side of the engine. I have changed both turbos and the problem was gone for a while. My joy lasted just 2 or three days.
Could you tell me if the noise was gone after you changed the inlet manifold gasket??
