See the new regs for London will be for all cars to be Euro 4 compliant to avoid LEZ charges.
With DPF and Nitrogen filters now being fitted to diesel cars think the Gov as usual is a bit behind the times again.
Would not be surprised if the duty on diesel will be increased though in near future to discourage us buying diesel D4 Landmark MY16 Santorini Black THE LAST

As most consumables are transported by diesel would have thought government might be wary of any more duty, cost of living & stuff?Peter

@DSL ... Nice brush! However, it's SWMBO's car, so not a hope of it receiving any such care.
My Google-fu is strong, and I find that the petrol Si6 is indeed a supercharged V6 so my advice above stands: it's a peach; buy one. MY91 110 CSW, so long ago I can barely remember it - sold

I think the quoted average figures for the Petrol are about 26mpg, so in real life that will probably be more like 16mpg
Think I'll wait and see some feedback from Petrol owners before I would commit to buying one. That won't be anytime soon looking at the prices I keep reaching on the configuration tool on the LR web site, Diesel or Petrol
I'm going to wait for a nice Dealer Principal to configure a nice spec in a colour I like and let them drive it around for 3 months and then save a fortune Discovery 4 HSE

So, 54% would buy the diesel and 46% would buy the petrol, not as clear cut an answer as I would have first thought

If i buy a D5 now it will be the petrol. I haven't tested one yet, I've been trying to find one at a local dealer to try.
I would prefer PHEV, but no idea when that will happen and if i can wait.MY06 S - Gone but not forgotten

I would like to see some real work mpg figures for both first before making a decision and obviously drive them.
I guess if the petrol was near the same mpg as the diesel, then probably go for that, but in reality I can't see how it will be.

I have only driven the Diesel myself, as the dealership didn't have a petrol available, but my reasoning for thinking about the petrol over the diesel is simple. If the government 'declare war' on diesel as its beginning to look like it will, they may well raise the duty on diesel and also the road tax, along with other 'incentives' such as the scrappage scheme. I know it will start off with the older diesels, but I don't think that it will be long before the Euro 6 engines also come under attack.
Given the above, I don't think that it will be long before the actual running cost between diesel and petrol will narrow and become pretty much similar. For me, it's not so much of an issue, as I only do a very low annual mileage, but what will it do to the 2nd hand value of a diesel engined car ? Will it make a diesel worth only 40% of the value of the petrol equivalent ?
I would prefer the diesel for its better towing characteristics, but I just wonder if its the right way to go these days ?
