Turbo advice please people
Afternoon everyone,
So our workhorse Tonka has just done the dirty and requires a new turbo. There was a engine management fault showing with a little hesitancy. No smoke, unusual noises and whilst it's happy at rest, asking it to work up a hill there is less power and irregularity on the engine.
Have been advised that the turbo is the problem and requires replacing. They have quoted £2300 to replace with a re-conditioned turbo from Land Rover (I am sure that she said they get their turbos from LR) and it would take approximately 6-7 hours to do this and my query is - do I bother?
It's a 2005 2.7 SE, 169,000 miles and so far have enjoyed replacing the navigation screen, gear box, alternators x 3, air suspension, drive shaft. But it has been a fantastic family car and we head down to France and the Alps 2-3 times a year in total comfort and after driving 10 hours I have no back ache.
My heart says repair it, my head says what if it does something else expensive and then I have wasted the money for a re-conditioned turbo.
Spent the last week dithering, have another car so not pushed to speed to make a decision but would appreciate any thoughts.

Take it somewhere else. LR will charge you top money for anything. There are many independents, some who sponsor this site and contribute, that would do it for a lot less I am sure.

How much for the turbo?? Phone around for a few quotes as that seems about double what it cost me (well WD) last time, plus get yer codes read just so peeps here can point you in one way or t'other.

take it somewhere cheaper.
recon turbo itself is £350 + labour
So if your paying that sort of money, you could get some more miles out the work horse

I've recommended Risborough 4x4 in Bledlow before, they did a good job and continue to, for me. They can sometimes not be the quickest, with a call though.-------------------------------------------------------------------

I can highly recommend a brilliant independent in Oxfordshire so not that far away from you and has a courtesy car when you book in. I've used them several times for different things and they always come up trumps. The money you have been quoted at nearly £2.5k is a complete joke for just a turbo problem, are you paying for their fancy showroom and premises?????

You've clearly never been anywhere near Hughenden Motors!!
They completely screwed up the front suspension on my A6, I'd never go there again...-------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi,
Before making the decision on the total replacement, check the actuator. They can stick which can produce similar faults to yours in that the car drives OK but can struggle on hills/load etc. This is because the variable turbo means that it can be spinning fine but the vanes wont "shape" right for some load maps.
Mine had that fault, although it was the electronics of the actuator not the linkage, but I read enough to know that the sticking linkage can be an issue and is worth a hopefully look at first.

Just replaced my Turbo with a brand new Borg Warner (or should I say my Indi did) No body off took them around 7 or 8 hours I think at around £70 and hour. I supplied the turbo from site sponsor Advanced Factors using forum discount of course.
Roughly 760 plus vat fot turbo and 560 plus vat labour so 1320 plus 264 vat totaling 1584.00 so it is not always as bad as some of the £3K horror stories you hear.

What was the fault with the old Turbo? Did you get a chance to have a look at it once off?

The old turbo had been playing up for a couple of years as it didnt like you putting it under pressure especially up hills and in sports mode when the revs were higher for longer it was just creating an Overboost condition. The actuator was getting jammed and both myself and the Indi had cleaned it up and got it working many times but we thought in the end that the turbo vanes were sticking as well as getting the actuator working again was becoming a constant task.
Forgot to look at the turbo after removal as gave it to the indy to refurb or bin accordingly as he wished. Must ask him what it was like as I was just so glad to get it changed after so long. Didnt fancy going down the refurb path as it is so awkward to change the turbo didnt want to end up doing it twice and I had read on here somewhere that Borg Warner dont actually supply parts for refurbs so not sure how there are actually genuine versions available? ( not sure if true or not )
If you have never lubed up the actuator before then I suggest you give it a go or two before shelling out for a turbo but in my case it became inevitable D4 HSE Lux MY16 Club Waitomo

Had my actuator sticking and was told it was a body off job to replace by a local company
Ended up lubing the actuator gratuitously a few times and all was good for a year until the main bearings span (Turbo Actuator was still working though )
Long meat skewer through the access panel was ideal to work the actuator arm with a thin hose connected to it to run the lubricant down whilst i was working it
Based on the crud that dropped underneath it was definitely hitting the spot about perfectly
