Dead engine?
Hello.
So I’m sat waiting for recovery on the Bodmin bypass and wondered what the likelihood of my engine being totally ruined is.
Situation: has been sounding really lumpy for the last couple of days. Just a weird extra chugging noise. Left to return home and 10 miles down the road chugging gets louder and whirrier and all of a sudden bang. All off lights on -> verge etc.
It won’t turn over. Just goes flat when I try.
Smell of burning in the engine bay (from the oil cap)
Potential oil by the fan at the front (can’t confirm if this is new tho) EDIT: yup this is fresh and all over the fan.
To keep me amused for the next few hours. Any thoughts?

It'll be fine, just your windscreen washers needing topped up
How good would that be if it was true
Sounds like its toast

Sorry to say, you can't afford to just let noises go unchecked with these cars. They can be a potential catastrophe at any time, especially if you are aware of something and ignore it.
Sorry that doesn't help you right now, but might be a warning to others Richard

Jut been picked up. Oil leaking out the bottom. Uggggh.
What’s the thinking nowadays. Is a new engine viable or is it a sell for parts situation.

Have a word with Woody. He's south of Bristol and see what he'd charge for a new S type jag donor engine installed. New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)

I'm guessing it's the dreaded oil pump casing fractured and the tensioner has come off. Has your D3 ever had a new oil pump fitted? Hopefully I'm wrong but it does sound rather terminal. There are many good reports of Woody's expertise and he's West Country based.

Thanks. I’m gutted too. Took my time to find great history. Resides in paying for maintenance regardless. For it to go bang is gutting 😢
Got home at 8pm two recovery trucks and some calamity along the way. The best part of the day is it was only me and doggo. Kids were elsewhere. The breakdown was precarious so yeah things could have been a lot worse.
Current feelings is look for scrapper to offer as non runner.
Thanks for the replies and good luck out there.

I was in the same situation at the start of the year with my 3.0 TDV6. Luckily, I could (just) about justify to get it fixed given the value of the vehicle. Unfortunately though, for the 2.7, if it is in need of a complete rebuild, it may not be worth it Kev
