Decisions at 300k - 2011 2.7 D4

Hi - our Disco needs a transmission rebuild at a cost of around 7.5k to 9k. Given the car once repaired would only seem to be worth maybe 20k according to Redbook, its obviously a big decision on whether to invest.

Financially we cant really afford to upgrade/ finance at the moment so its really a decision of whether to fix it and run it to the end of its life, of sell as is and apply the repair money to another car.

What I would like to get a handle on is

1. What is the rough engine life on the 2.7s and approx cost to replace
2. What other major work is likely to be needed over the next few years. I know timing belts will need doing again bit not sure what else should be factored in

Appreciate any insight!

Cheers

think youve done well to achieve that mileage...you have had your dollars worth..anything else is a bonus...the only way forward from my view point would be towards secondhand spares..perhaps from a donor car...

I would be looking for other quotes - typical cost to rebuild the ZF box is around $4.5K - have you tried A &B Automatics in Dandenong - they are the experts.

Thats really cheap but Im in WA so we always pay more! 7.5k is for a fitted reconditioned transmission in Perth……other places were quoting 8-9. If diesel hadnt shot up Id have considered driving over!

If I had of known that 300,000 kilometers was doing well I wouldnt have bought it. Seems a very short lifespan for a car but I am definitely not speaking from a position of knowledge

Maybe one is thinking/talking in miles, the other in kilometers

187 k mls / 300 k kilometers

we would all like them to last forever...in this day and age would be happy if they would last 100k miles without MAJOR faults..LR have shown us not to expect that given the crank issues,,its a pity as growing up i always thought LR was the best and would see me out,,,not so clearly,,,think it may also depend on how the car has been used...serviced etc,,

Hi DJC.

I have a similar vehicle with a similar kms to yours.

I am also in Perth, Western Australia.

Have you decided to keep your vehicle and replace your transmission?

Whilst a new vehicle is always a preferred option - the $100k plus necessary for a new vehicle represents a lot of spare parts that may or may not be required.

300,000km is not necessarily 'doing well' in terms of engine life assuming you have both a good service record and, frankly, no bad luck. They'll be some on here who'd have been delighted to reach that number but a decent service schedule should see them double that and more.

Mine's had a gearbox clean and a new TC at about 250k and it was well worth the investment. Keep it going, if you have the cash to do so.
