Diagnostic code reader tool

I have seen the tool advertised on this site for £405. I think it looks great but it’s too much tool/ money for my use I believe.
Are there other suitable tools to use for the basic diagnosing or faults please? The ability to reset things and calibrate would be good. I realise the twenty quid units are very very basic and have similar already. I was wondering if the 150/200 price range contained any suitable machines please?
I have a Discovery 3 and my daughter a 2004 Freelander.

I have the iCarsoft Lr2.

It's good but one thing it can't do is recalibrate the suspension so if I need that doing I have to bung £30 to the local mechanic.

I had the Icarsoft and it reads just about everything the iid toool can, theres also a good second hand market so if/when you have a spare 400 quid you might lose 20 quid when selling the Icarsoft so no real issue.
Quite a few on here have bought the Icarsoft

The very first thing I did with the Icarsoft was clear the block heater errors to get it working and its still fine 4 years later

Theres no doubting the IID is the superior tool, but the Icarsoft is damned good for the money

The 1930 is around a hundred and the updated version around 150 quid.
I’m thinking the 1930 won’t be up to calliberating the suspension levelling? Or the more complicated jobs?

I don't think either icarsoft can do suspension calibration. The i930 I know cannot. If that's important to you, get the IID tool which can also program ECUs etc. The i930 is great value at under £100 as a LR specific fault code reader and reset tool but it has limitations. Hence the premium for the IID.

Not sure about Freelander compatibility for either the IID or icarsoft as I've never owned a freelander and I don't have access to my i930 at the moment to check. The IID is VIN locked for the more advanced functions so you may need an extra license.

There is a reason the Icarsoft is 100 quid Thumbs Up

Most disco owners will never need the capabilities of the IID, the only thing Ive really used mine for in 4 yrs is to upload the software for the california shunt, sure ive played with other stuff but only becasue I could, none of it essential to the cars well being.

If you just want to READ fault codes the iCarsoft will do fine.

Anything more than that and the more expensive tools (IID or Blackbox) are what you need.

Please elaborate. I've never had an issue clearing a fault code. Which codes can they not clear?

If the expensive obd tool at 405 has to be attached to the cars vin number then potentially without purchasing another licence it won’t be much use if any on my daughters Freelander then?
Is there a decent code reader/ scanner that will do most jobs if not all on both our cars?
I was coming round to the idea of four hundred quid for a reader but if it only works on one car I’m a lot less keen. We have seven cars between our family and it would be nice to think it could be useful,on more than one for that price?
I’m not a mechanic just an owner looking to be able,to identify basic issues on the D3 and her Freelander.

The fault code reading function isn't VIN locked. More advanced functions are and require a per vehicle licence. You can see which features are VIN locked on the GAP website.
