Dicky tailgate door latch |
|
The upper tailgate door on my D3 is becoming unreliable - more often than not it won't unlock. I can hear the actuator, but it's like it just doesn't have enough grunt to operate the latch.
Do the actuators fail this way (graudally), or does the latch just need lubrication?
I have squirted some white lithium grease in the latch but it hasn't had time to work it's way in yet.
Anyone else experience this? 2007 Land Rover LR3 4.0L V6

As the sun was shining today I thought I'd have a look at my rear latch.
With top hatch open I pushed a screwdriver into the lock to simulate it closing.
When I pushed the handle to open the door I could see the lock was not opening all the way.
After a close look I could see the plastic cover on the lock had a split in it and when it tried to open it was catching on the side of the lock. So I cut it off and sprayed some silicon on it. Now its working fine.
Haven't taken her out for a run yet. I hope she doesn't rattle.
Pete.

At this stage I would bite the bullet and swap out the actuator unit whilst you can still open the boot. I also bodged in an emergency release cable as well for good measure! 2000 D2 TD5 - big red tractor no longer with us

Agree with Frenchy, my actuator only gave a couple of slow openings before packing up completely.Replace it now while you have easy access to the lower tailgate cover, part number is FUG500010.Whilst you have it all apart, drill the lever on the latch and run a cable that protrudes from under the tailgate cover......some have run a cable to the rear seats or even a cheap solenoid direct to the latch lever.

Mine has been fine since I squirted lithium grease into the latch, but yesterday it was playing up again, I could hear the actuator operating, but it was like the solenoid just didn't have enough grunt to operate the latch. Once again the car had been sitting in the sun in 35 degrees, so it seems that heat is affecting it.
This morning it's much cooler and it opens without a problem. Can't see anything untoward with around the latch itself so my gut feel is that the solenoid is on the way out. Will buy a new one this week. 2007 Land Rover LR3 4.0L V6
