Disco 3 4.4V8 (LPG) do or don't?

A friend of mine found a D3 4.4V8, it is running on LPG. It has 240000kms. That's all I know.
I had a TDV6 myself and had a lot of issues with it, the petrol ones are very rare in Belgium and unknown. What are the experiences with the V8, is it more reliable than the TDV6? What about the LPG?
Where should he look for if he goes to inspect the D3?

yes petrol ones are better.

There is always a bit of a risk as to how well the LPG has been fitted though

The V8 is pretty much rock solid.

Pretty much the only things you need to worry with the engine are the PCV valve (looks like a saucer, if it hasn’t been changed - change it) and the coolant system air bleed valve (also called t-piece) which is made of plastic and gets rather fragile with age.

I think the timing chains tend to be replaced around 300k km.

The auxiliary drive belts (2x) need to be changed around 240k km if they haven’t been changed before. You probably want to change the tensioners and pulleys at the same time. One of them (can’t remember which) was improved in a subsequent model year.

You might want to change the spark plugs, on paper they’re due at 160k km but might be due again 80 k km later. It can be diagnosed though so changing isn’t necessarily mandatory.

Other than that, you’ll have the normal suspension related things like bushes, EAS, air conditioning, alternator, differentials, gearbox, torque converter, etc. that might need some TLC.

I’d change absolutely all fluids unless there are watertight records that they’ve been changed very recently.

There was some story that a bad LPG system might make the engine last less but I have no experience with them. Some people here on the forums seem to be happy with their V8s with LPG, though.

Allegedly the they can start to suffer from valve seat recession after about 60,000 miles 100,000km on LPG, this would be evidenced by misfires on either fuel amongst other things.

A valve lube system should take care of any valve seat regression. Mine has done 120k Miles on LPG with no apparent problems

Thank you all for the tips. It convinced him to go for a petrol Land Rover. At the end the Disco didn't win, he bought a 4.2V8 Range with a CNG installation.
