So I see, it was a box full of tubes - looked most odd!

spent a couple of hours trying to get at the 2 engine mount bolts and I just cant do it, it would be ok if they were nuts and bolts but the nuts are captive so you seem to have to come from the top and undo them but the steering column is above it. I havent tried taking the pan off and just hoping it will slip out as I didnt want to get that far and find I had to raise engine and put everything back on again. So give up and going to the dealers for them to struggle with it Sad
update, took to dealers booked it in, they had it from 8am I rang at 3.30 they said getting on well with it so come at 4. got there to be told they couldnt start the job as they didnt have the oil Censored they obviously lied when they said they were getting on well with it. going back in soon when they have the oil, all they could say was sorry and they dont know why I was told that . I am also getting a courtescy car this time.

Stu,

Sorry to drag this up

How are things with the Miller Matic DM in your gearbox? I think mine would benefit a good oil change

Has anyone ever had a failure using non spec'd oil in there D3 gearbox or is it nobody dares take the risk of not using what Land Rover spec'd oil

I had a PG1 Gearbox in a Rover 220 Coupe and Rover spec'd oil but when i had a box rebuilt at S&D Transmissions in Doncaster they said just use ATF and you'll never get another problem..The box was fine and handled plenty of abuse for years after that

I did my flush back in Sept and all has been good. Miller oils seem to be completely fine. However when I did mine I couldn't get the sump pan and filter off without damaging the bolts, and not having spares at the time I decided not to bother doing the filter. I have only just ordered the bolts from TLO as I have noticed a small return in the rev fluctuating, but I'm pretty certain that this is down to the filter and not the oil. I would definately recommend miller oils.

I have gave my auto box a real good flush today and its alot smoother through the rev's and on gear changes

Drained and refilled 3 times and cleaned the filter in the parts washer

I used Exol Universal ATF to do the flushing then refilled with Land Rover Oil

Just a quick question regarding this.

How easy is it to actually get the oil into the fill hole of the auto box?

I know LR only sell this oil in 1 litre packs, but is there any special trickery needed to get the oil in or what? How did you guys do it?

Any "action shots" of you giving yours a "damn good filling"? Whistle

Hi Paul,

It's easy if you have a pump! Basically the hole is on the side i.e. vertical and there is no space above it to allow you to tip anything in. Ideally a manual pump should be used push the oil up and in through the hole.

If you don't have one, then I suspect some tubing would work as long as you could hold the oil up by the car door. i.e. you stand next to the car, tube goes under and into the fill hole. Make sure there is no air in the tube though.

Sorry no photos of mine - too messy to be thinking of taking photos

So you used a pump? Are these available anywhere (i.e. cheap) or are they special (i.e. expensive)? I've never seen one Embarassed

Stu,

Is this the type of pump that would work? I've seen others that work as a large "syringe", but this one seems to have two tubes (in and out) - maybe it would be easier that refilling the syringe every litre.

Has anyone else done this job that can give me any pointers?

Cheers,
Paul

I used the 1 litre plastic bottle you get with gearbox oils, it has a small tube on the end. I filled up the bottle then placed it in hot water to thin the oil. It was just a case of squeezing the bottle to get the oil in. There is room and its easy enough just takes a refills to get enough oil in. You dont need to use a pump but it is easier.

I had thought that it should come with a filler tube to squeeze the oil through, but didn't know.....can you confirm that the LR sourced oil comes with a tube? (or was it an aftermarket oil?)

What did you fill the bottle up with? Surely it was already full with gearbox oil? Question Whistle

Thanks a lot milbo Thumbs Up

PS. Can anyone confirm if the type of pump shown in my previous message looks about right?

I used an old bottle I had from previous car so it was empty to start with. I bought the Miller matic oil but that didnt come with any tube if I remember correctly. Most small top up bottles of gearbox oil come with a tube as far as I know so just buy a cheap one of them and empty it out.
Theres a lot of room at the side of the gearbox to get the bottle quite high so it runs in pretty good.
