An hour or three spent scanning the threads on here will be time well spent. To be honest, without knowing the age of the D4 you want, it's hard to be very specific and there's a few things that apply to D3 and D4s. A few earlier models might have the 2.7 engine in them, but go for the 3.0 twin turbo, or I suspect it wouldn't be worth changing really! So, generally speaking, the 8 speed auto box is better than the 6 speed (which is by no means bad) and gives about 10 more BHP. Again, depending on mileage, ideally you want the big service (belt changes) to have been done, or reflected in the price. As for common faults, there are fairly few, but just like the D3, it's a complicated beast, so ensure everything works. Look for knocking when braking or going over bumpy ground. This'll mean the front lower arms in all probability need done. The rear upper ones possibly though, or possibly both. Earlier air suspension compressors had a habit of failing (raise and lower the car a few times on the trot to check that) although later ones, or ones that have been changed for later ones are much better. Trim levels are, especially in the later years all over the shop, but leather seats and a reversing camera are good to have. Top models also have better audio equipment and the front seats are a bit better. But really, as with all such complicated beasts, a good service record is a definite bonus. But for anything else, read on here into the early hours. Not much of a story line, but knowledge is power!

The best "tip" I can offer you is maintenance/history/records, everything else for the most part is down to cosmetics and personal taste.
If the history is not present, chances are the the work has not been done and I'd be walking away. As has already been said, there is a mountain of information here on the site which will forearm you when looking at a prospective purchase.
Best of luck yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ
