It has been with us for a long time and I would have kept her.
Thanks to this fantastic forum for the great advices which have helped me a lot to live better with her even if I always needed the support from Geoff who has been great for any work and issue I have had with it
Honestly I cannot complain about reliability which has been very good (almost only routine mainteinance) and it was really the perfect car for usIt takes all sorts (to make a world).

NO. Would have to pay a lot of taxes (more than the value of the car) It takes all sorts (to make a world).

Out of curiosity - how much does .pt want to tax your 2006 D3 for?
The tax authority here would like to get a kind contribution of ~3500 EUR for one with 200000 km on it. Surely .pt isn’t worse? And a working D3 is surely worth more than that

Much worst
38000 euro is what I was quoted. Wanted to buy an F-Type R 5.0 here but would have to pay 32000 euro to import it there
In Portugal they have very high taxes for big car (emissions for mine were very high)
A new Discovery 5 will cost you about 50% more new
In the past tax was only applied on new cars but then a lot of people was importing almost new cars. So now taxes will apply also if you import a used carIt takes all sorts (to make a world).

Huh. That does sound insane - I mean 38000 EUR for a 2006 car.
Here they calculate the “local price” of an equivalent model and you pay tax on that value. For MY06 it was like 30%-ish.

There was an online calculator to see how much you would pay to take the car there but was in Portuguese and do not have the link!
For the Disco they told me the the main issue was emission
Have heard that in Portugal around 22% of the state tax income is from taxes on cars and related costsIt takes all sorts (to make a world).

Assuming you’ve been a resident in the UK and are “permanently” moving to Portugal can’t you take the car with you as part of your move? At least here you don’t have to pay import tax on such cars. I thought this worked between most EU countries.

Moved to quite a lot of countries including to Switzerland and never had to pay taxes for the car when part of the move
It is formally possible with a lot of restrictions but they told me that it would be a long and difficult process ...
Also the car was owned by my wife which makes things even more complicatedIt takes all sorts (to make a world).

..by the way...in tax problem...sometimes Europe is incapable to make common rules for common problems? that seems very unfair to me, sometimes it does not surprise me that some want to leave lost in translation!

Here the tax authority and customs have been fighting since ~1995 in all courts possible including EU level. They’re losing the war, of course, but delaying as much as possible in the mean time.
Things they’ve eventually lost out on have been at least:
- VAT (if importing from another EU country)
- how car tax is calculated (plenty of different nuances here)
- removal of preferential treatment for cars purchased in Finland compared to imported from EU
- how CO2 emissions are calculated on imports (they charged too much)
- when the appeal period started for cases where a private person’s car tax would be lowered after EU court judgement was against tax authority but private person did it lodge an appeal before the court decision came
Truly great work and all tax payers are certainly getting their money’s worth in terms of how efficient customs and tax authority are. If only everyone else...... .
The ISV in Portugal seems to be a quite similar scheme. TBH, I’m surprised they’re allowed to do that since it seems to be very much against EU conventions, practices and laws again... perhaps nobody has sued them or the cases are still somewhere.

For cars (choices, availability, potential to do activities on tracks or to race etc) there is nothing like UK (except for driving on the wrong side)
My company car is already waiting there when I go back (but it is an XC 90)

That was indeed a big surprise also for me
Never had problems in the past also with Switzerland. There were some rules in some countries (ie car has to be yours for xx months or you cannot sell it for xx month) but never paid anythingIt takes all sorts (to make a world).
