I would think that fooling the sensor will lead to over fuelling, would it not ?.

Yeap. Just to get it running.
Then the switch is changed and ecu reads the real temp.

just reading one of the reply's about Peugeot starting better in the cold could this be something that Gap could offer in the iiD tool. You can tell it wont start as soon as you turn the key as it sounds different.
Maybe they could move the fuel map so its not at 0 but -1 or -2 (this is what the 5k resistor does)
I have no idea how to contact Gap though.....Pete do you know? or is it bell?

I did float that idea a year or more ago. It didn't go down well.
Even if GAP wanted to do it, or considered if was a sensible thing to do, you have to remember GAP charge about £200 for a re-map, (and the tool is £500 if you don't have one)
So suddenly a 15p resistor and push button look a more sensible option.

For info,
The 2.7 Jags and 3.0 Landrovers have hardware to monitor glowplug operation. So as soon as one fails I guess it flags up a fault code or ECU light. Hopefully the owner then gets them changed before they get scooted up or winter arrives

Cold start issue

Hi guys

I have read all your remarks regarding the cold start issue, and eagerly consumed the 5k ohm resister fix. I have a RR Sport,
Pretty sure it's the same engine largely, I couldn't start it today, so tried the hot water trick, if started fine .......so was thinking about how to get a more autonomous method of the resister trick, so

How about wiring a relay, standard type, into the starter circuit at the ignition switch, that energises when the starter is operated, that connects the resister, ! Hey presto no button needed, unless you wish to isolate the function in the summer.

Any thoughts guys?

I guess there may be some limitations. Will it start when the engine is really hot?
Will it start at normal temp.

But if you want to experiment. Go for it !

I would think fitting the relay near the battery would be sensible
The starter relay is near there.
But first you need to see if it starts ok at a rsnge of temperatues

Maybe a water temp sensor, into expansion tank, to disable the relay when the coolant is hot?

Now that is getting silly.

There is something simple and British about a resistor and button.
You know it’s likely to work when it’s bloody freezing

The ecu may take a temperature snapshot before it starts cranking to decide on fueling. So there is a small chance it won’t work

You're correct Pete. From my testing with my variable potentiometer and the momentary button there is definitely a delay between adjusting the pot, and the instrument cluster needle moving. Seems to take a snapshot/reading every 20 seconds or so and then adjusts the needle.

BTW, using my Autel AP200 I was able to adjust the pot so it was fooling the ECU into thinking the coolant was at 23 deg. C, which seems to be the sweet spot for my engine (when the instrument cluster was reading -5 deg. C and the coolant temp (with the engine having not run all day) was actually only -1 deg. C.)

-6 no glow plugs and a 15p resistor

Well last night it started at -6 that's the record for me so far. I must say it was a bit rough for about 30 seconds then it was fine.

Reading above about relays etc and extra temp sensors was pretty wild, reminded me of NASA spending millions on a pen that worked in space and the Russians using pencils. Laughing Laughing

My idea cost less than a fiver and it works for me.
All are welcome to use it at your own risk
Have a great Christmas all

Do you think it starts better at 23C rather than 70C (5K) ?

Injector Cleaner

aja4x4 wrote:
I would suggest you get the glow plugs replaced, you can feel when they are about to snap
The ones that i have had problems with have loosened off but then went tight due to carbon build up on the tips, if you cant get them out using gentle force tighten them back up and leave that one.
You may find you can get four or five out which will make a big difference to the starting. A couple of the plugs are a real pain to get to and i have seen just the other four changed on a couple of engines and they were done by Land Rover dealerships.

I have changed a number of glow plugs on these engines without issues but i have also had some that have snapped.
The last ones i did were on my own vehicle and i used a good quality injector cleaner for a month before removing them in hope it would remove the carbon, all six came out but i would need to repeat this a number of times on other engines to be sure it made a difference.

Can you recommend a good quality injector cleaner? (I take it this is an additive poured into the fuel tank…)
