?………….a major plus for D3/4 the rear seats fold flat, but if you want economy and reliability a Freelander but there rear seats don’t fold flat. Good luck and remember with a D3/4 you will have tremendous support and comradeship from this unique forum Thumbs Up

My 2009 Freelander 2 rear seats folded perfectly flat. I ran the FL2 for about eight years with hardly a fault in sight. A great car for everyday use. I bought the D3 alongside as I found the FL2 just a little short on space for camping holidays etc.

The D3 is superb but best as a second car only, I couldn't sleep if my work commute relied upon it daily. That's not a slight on the D3, but just sensible for any 150k mile car that's now 17 years old.

Although I didn’t keep the FL2 long I am almost certain the seats on mine didn’t fold flat, but I can add that I was invited to a LR off road experience and the FL2 with 4 occupants when up a long steep bank that a Defender could not get up, we actually overtook the Defender on the slope and this was with road tyres, truly unbelievable! The only thing that lets the FL2 down for off roaming is ground clearance, they are also very economical 40+mpg.

It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

The rear seat bases are designed to fold forward up against the front seats and then the seat backs fold down perfectly flat behind them onced youve removed the rear headrests. (You could put the seat backs down on top of the bases too, but as you say that would not give a flat load area.)

If you needed more room still, the seat bases come out completely with the removal of four (total) hex-screws. That means you can put the front seats forward a little and have an extra foot or so of load length. Very handy for sleeping as it gave over 6ft of length - enough for a very comfy standard air bed to go down.

The FL2 really would’ve benefited from a split tailgate.
Just one of the things I missed.
