Disco 4 - selecting Neutral
Hi all - On the D4 with the 8 speed gearbox, the gear lever is now a gear knob which rises from the console when the engine is started. You can then select the gear you require - R,N,D etc. When the engine is switched off, Park is automatically selected and the gear knob lowers into the console. If the engine is switched off whilst in Neutral it stays in Neutral for 10 minutes and then reverts to Park (according to the manual).
There could be several situations (engine won't start, battery too flat to start engine but has enough power to give ignition etc.) where it is desirable/necessary to be in Neutral without the engine running to either winch the vehicle onto a flatbed, push it out of a dangerous position etc. so question to all the fundi's our there - is there any way of selecting Neutral without starting the engine and any way of making it stay in Neutral?

There is an emergency park release lever near the emergency parking brake release. You need to turn the lock anti-clockwise to release the lever then pull the lever up with the attached red handle to select neutral. Cheers Ian

Excellent - thank you. Tried it and it works! For anyone else who tries you need to remove the cup holder tray behind the park break lever first. Once that is out (easy) the red lever is revealed. You do however still need some electrics i.e. car must have ignition on.

It was the only way I could get it to select Neutral. Without the ignition on nothing seemed to happen. I think you would have the same problem in the 6 speed which has a gear lever. If the lever is in Park it can only be moved to Neutral if the foot brake is pressed which releases an electronic lock which then allows the lever to move to Neutral - this electronic lock only seems to work when the ignition is on.

On the 6 speed there is a little button to press on back of leaver under the trim (same trim you remove to release hand brake) that releases the gear stick so you can put into neutral incase of total electrical power failure. Bet there is a similar button for 8 speed?

Hmmm, it should work without power as that is the idea; even if it is more awkward with the knob fin the down position.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948
