Disco 4 Windscreens (are they all like this)
When you look at the A Pillar trims on your Discovery 4, do they look like the the ones in the images below.
You are looking for the black printed border of the screen that is not covered by the A pillar trims.
In this image there is no border visible..
And in this image it is visible
Both images are of the original factory fitted screen..Gone 2016 Landmark D4

I have edited the two images to better explain the question I am asking.
Does your windscreen look like this?

Mine is still original and the blacked out area of glass is visible from top to bottom.
Also noticed it shows the black by about 2 mm on the offside but 4mm on the nearside but guess that's just how it was fitted.

No, its not how it was fitted..
The printing of the black border is not equal on both sides, the offside border is thinner by about 2.2 mm which means when the screen is fitted centrally in the body it appears offset.
This is what I suspected was happening i.e. all the screens for the Disco 4 are made with faulty black printing.
If the windscreen gets replaced and the fitters centralise the screen to the A pillar trims (so that it looks centered) the VIN number is partially hidden in the viewing window.
Thank you for responding, it would be nice if a few more members confirmed my theory.Gone 2016 Landmark D4

er … sorry to disappoint but mine's a Pilkington so guessing original. black border is ~2.5mm both sides and I'd say equal top to bottom.
sorry to have been so long replying, didn't realise we were on a 20 minute SLA for responses on the forum.

If your screen is labelled 'Pilkington' without the 'Land Rover' Logo then it has probably been replaced at some time.

Aye, it looks like my original (2016 Landmark) is like your’s. It’s just another slip in standards by JLR, I can’t believe how poor the 2016 model is when compared to my previous 2010. If I could afford to get rid.............. it’s replacement certainly won’t be a JLR product, and that’s after 30-odd years of enduring their products!

Perhaps it's not safe to assume the borders are equal.
Perhaps, the offside purposely has a smaller border on right hand drive vehicles for maximum clear screen visibility?
Perhaps, on left hand drive vehicles the shorter border is on the opposite side?
I might be talking sh@ but, on the other hand, it would explain the situation. Mods:

That's FAR too sophisticated for JLR!

That would mean those with equal width borders had the screen misplaced when installed. 2014 MY Discovery XS Indus Silver. Sadly gone. Second last LR of forty eight years continuous ownership.

What it boils down to is this... the original screens were fitted by robots and were positioned perfectly central to the body.
Replacement screens were installed by windscreen replacement companies and the fitters would have positioned the screen to suit the A pillar trims i.e. offset slightly to the nearside.
I know that my replacement genuine LR screen was originally placed central to the body but when the A pillar trims were clipped into place the fitters re-attached the rubber suckers and pulled it to the nearside to make it 'appear' centered.Gone 2016 Landmark D4

Are you sure it’s a genuine Pilkington screen?- if not it’s sure to be a Chinese copy, if you’ve had it fitted recently, complain to who fitted it and insist on a Pilkington, if it is heated and is not Pilkington the heating elements will fail no time soon, guaranteed.
Looking at the trim there is a gap at the top nearest the door, this is a potential failure at motorway speeds and a source of wind noise.
Edit: forget the top statement, a re-reads reveals it is factory fitted, missed the under written comment on original post. Take it back to LR and let them sort it It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

1. windscreen has +/- 3 mm aprox of horizontal play when you install it at the origin
2. A Pillar cover has */- 2 mm aprox. mm of installation play (see circled point/reference)

And what is the difference between your two reference points?
I don't see any difference, both of the A pillar trims align to the same position relative to the roof weather strip.
Where did you get your tolerance information from and how do you adjust an A pillar trim horizontally?Gone 2016 Landmark D4

the original screens were fitted by robots and were positioned perfectly central to the body.
when you say "perfectly", the robots will fit things "within tolerance". one corner may well be "perfect" but if you think of the size of the window, it only needs to be out by a tiny fraction of a degree to put out all the other corners by a millimetre.
And the windscreen itself will be made to a size +/- a tolerance.
Land Rover don't make the screens, Pilkington's do … so LR logo or lack of it is not going to make a difference to the size or quality of the piece.
