Discovery 3 - 07 plate. Sell as is or break for spares?
Hi. Last night suffered I fear a fatal engine failure. 07 Discovery 3 HSE Auto. It is on the garage drive ready for diagnosis but I fear the worst. - New engine . (Cam chain issue - probably the tensioner failure as the chains were replaced at 95,000.)
130,000 miles, Had it for 7 years. Spent a lot of money on it. New compressor last month, replaced the EGR's, New discs all round 6 months ago, Wheels refurbished last year and still immaculate, Aircon all works and have a spare set of mud terrain tyres and wheels.
Probably worth before the disaster £6-7k. Probably £3k plus to repair now.
I have the space to store it whilst bits are sold off it but has anyone done this and is it worth all of the agro?
I am based in Sidmouth and can't see many being broken for spares in this area (lots up north).
Opinions please.

Unless it is a reconditioned engine, am i not running the risk of other faults maybe and this could be a short term solution and cost more in the long run? The cost of an recon engine with a warranty and having it fitted may not be the most cost effective or am i missing something?
Basically should I cut and run? Mind you, I do love my disco and everything else has been done.

What do you stand to loose if you break it and what twill it cost to replace it , if the cars sorted with everything being done then id put another engine in either a recon or a very low mileage second hand unit

Look at it like this, say you break it, what will you buy in its place? and will it be someone elses troublesome hand me down, versus the cost of repairing it.

DSL will be along to tell you to sell it as parts any minute now, but if you like the car you will you get anything better for what a new engine will cost?

Opinions appreciated. Thank you all for your input.
What do you think I am looking at cost wise for a new engine fitted?
Anyone had it done?

Send a message to DiscoMickey, he is a fair distance from you, but am sure he would do a great job at a sensible price, if you have breakdown recovery cover they may even move it up there for you.
Good luck

Get it stripped and sell parts, or sell complete. They aren’t worth risking another unknown engine in it.

I'd get a new engine if it was me.

That's what I'd do as well subject to cost of a new engine of course

Did the oil pump not get updated when the cam belts were done? Assuming it just cut out?

Verdict
Oil pump failed and the belt jumped off and bang. Just pleased that I was just coming out of a 20mph and turning into a small slip road. If it had happened on the motorway 🤢.
Initial inspection is top end damage but they will not know about the bottom until they get there. They think because of the low speed/revs I may be lucky but it is a bit of an unknown.
In a real dilemma whether to sell it as it is. Does anyone have any idea as to what I may get for it as it is - just to get it gone?
There is a scrap company on the web that offered £1176 and they collect. Is that the market or are there better avenues to explore?
