Bottom tailgate will not lock when closed

As above, it is taking up to a dozen times sometimes for the tailgate catches to lock after closing the tailgate. If I press the button I can hear a wurring noise but nothing is happening then suddenly the next time it will lock, any ideas please Big Cry
