"...commenting to Auto Week magazine on Land Rover’s bottom placing in the survey, Al Kammerer, Land Rover/Jaguar director of product development, said Land Rover had fixed the problems detailed in the survey, which related in part to electronics involved in changing Range Rover engines from BMW-supplied units to Jaguar engines. Land Rover engineers did not account for all the different electronic connections that a Land Rover must mate to, compared with Jaguar, which triggered fault codes in the software that lit up the vehicles’ engine warning light. In addition to the engine warning light, J.D. Power survey respondents mentioned brake noise and difficulty closing the Range Rover Sport's tailgate...."
However, I also noted that LR has recently booked 20% less provisions to cover warranty costs. Does it indicate that the quality has improved?
Some people says LR is difficult to sell, some say that residual value is good. In Germany, LR iks selling much less than XC90 or Touareg but better than Jeep or Pathfinder. This must have a link to residual values too.
Any comments on the quality and the 2nd hand values would be highly appreciated.
Further, there are 3 options (S, SE, HSE), the better equipped model is always 5000 euros more expensive than the previous one. The top model, HSE, is as expensive as M-class or Audi Q7. What option is the best value for money? I agree that S is very naked. However, SE costs some 5000 euros more. And then we are only 5000 euros away from M/X5/Q7 category!!! As a result, I have not given serious thoughts to SE. Any views?
Any idea how are the sales volumes between S, SE and HSE?
Finally, whatever model I decide to go ahead, what are the MUST options every Discovery must have? Leather, automatic gearbox, air suspension? Any idea how many % choose these options?

Pretty sure you'll find the JD Power survey is based on the DII not the D3The End

although the RRS tailgate gets a mention
as far as specification - it depends upon what your requirements are, I'd say air suspension is a minimum if you plan to drive on anything but tarmac - although NWoods has shown what a coil-sprung disco3 is capable of...
Everything else depends upon your bank balance and your needs...

The 2005 JD survey says it covers vehicles registered upto Aug 2003..... so I would guess the 2006 covers upto aug 2004 and therfore wouldnt include the D3.
its the early ones that have had most of the issues and hence ID expect the D3 to improve in the 2008 survey but wont do well in the 2007.
If youre buying one now you should be safe.2004 TDV6 HSE Auto Zambezi Silver

It makes perfect sense to me.....and to flip the power of surveys for you ....a recent poll for Which? showed that the Discovery was the 3rd most most loved car with 92% of owners saying they would recommend one to a freind 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

This was the first car that I bought using my heart and not my head. My heart has not been disappointed and my head is still trying to work it out.2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

I am merely asking why ? Mr. DickH might have a legitimate point behind his question 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

No particular point, and no need for any banging of heads as far as I can see. You just seem to do a lot of PR for them.

No just indicating that you can't take much from surveys and polls which ever way you look at them
As for PR.... it's more that I am an enthusiast .....and whatever the hobby an enthusiast won't talk their hobby down too often...
....there are many others out there to do that 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

I am overjoyed with my D3 HSE TDV6-engined beast.
Looked at the Q7 and it didn't tick the boxes. Mainly - it's an Audi
X5 and ML-whatever have stigma attached, like the Audi.
I don't buy a car for it's residuals, they're chuff-all use to me in the 4-7 years of ownership
I'm another totally satisfied owner of a D3 HSE Auto TDV6. This is my first Land Rover and a mightily impressive beast it is too. Had for 1 week short of a year, coming up for 14000 miles and aprt from a dodgy passenger door lock (fixed by the dealers), nothing has gone wrong with it! I've had it Turbochipped which has done wonders for it's performance, especially when towing, and has also reduced fuel consumption by some 3 to 4 mpg.
It's not perfect (but what is); the alarm is pathetic and I always forget to press the unlock button on the dash when I want to open the tailgate with the engine running (but I like the autolock feature so won't switch it off!).
What I will say is that it's the best car I have ever owned, and probably the best I will ever own (unless I upgrade to the TDV8 in the future )Now an ex-D3 owner after 7 happy years. Miss the car but not the big bills
