Slow progress on mine.

Had the rear upper arms, Rear ARB bushes, track rod and track rod ends replaced.

Going in soon to have all the oils changed.

Does anyone else find the v8 burns a bit of oil?

Thanks

Mine doesn’t burn any, I measure the volume when changing. I also regularly check the oil level.

I did notice some sweating somewhere up on the engine (can’t be seen from above) when I changed front diff oil a few weeks ago. It wasn’t there last March at the time of the previous engine oil change.

Oil loss from V8 engines

Hi Jack Smile)

I'm on my third D3 V8 now, first two I bought with low mileage (50k-ish), ran one to 140k, other until 80k.

With those, neither lost any noticeable oil, great engines.

I've had my LATEST V8 just over a year and added 10k-ish miles. Oil has gone from middle to bottom of stick in that time, sorry don't know what that calculates to in litres/pints. So, basically, using a LITTLE more oil than my first two engines but nothing to worry about. Passed MOT fine.

First thing is to know if your engine BURNS oil or LEAKS oil ? I've never seen oil drips below my engines, so I guess my present engine MIGHT be burning a little oil. No sign of oil in coolant, no smoke, no heavy carbon powder at the exhaust exits; so no conclusion to date.

Long time ago when I did HUGE mileage I had two successive identical Vauxhall Zafiras. The first one needed oil checked every couple of weeks, the second one never lost a drop of oil. (I bought the second one from the lease company 2007 for my family, we sold it in 2014, my son spotted it recently still trundling around !!). We NEVER discovered where the oil went on that first Zafira; no drips, no smoke, no sign anywhere.

So I guess my knee-jerk is if your engine has no knocks, rattles, is not tappetty (sp ?), doesn't smoke, passes MOT and EM light stays off, retains its poke and smoothness, then don't get depressed; and if the REST of the car is good then drive and enjoy Smile))

Bear in mind these cars are ULEZ-compliant, so if they pass MOT emissions tests then the exhaust is probably not dumping a lot of burnt oil.

I see you're located Beds/Bucks, I get excellent work done on my D3 by Unit 4 Motors in Bletchley, I'm sure they'll listen to your engine and mention any concerns. Personally I've learned to trust those guys for over 20 years. Skilled, brains, honest.

106K on a 2006 V8 (no LPG conversion). I use perhaps 1L between changes at 12k miles. No leaks whatsoever.

Hi Jack,
Just to let you know that I scratched my V8 itch by buying a FFRR SC 05!.
Toyed with the the D3 option but honestly, as I have my current workhorse, it's just like dissing her a wee bit!
Had the SC a month now and the oil consumption is a minor compared to the fuel!!
No oil used but I'm servicing Monday. MPG is a breezy 12.5 mpg!!
I think that I would like a a V8 D3 but need to get oer this beats first!!
Following this thread with interest!

Welcome! And well done. I've had maybe 7 or 8 diesels and the V8 has been my fav all around. I love the engine. (Hate the mileage...!)

Welcome and nice. If you're not worried about MPG they are a great buy. I'm coming up to my 5th year of ownership.

On the hunt for a V8

I didn’t realise there were so few left in the country! I’m on the hunt for one now, which has lead me to this excellent forum? Other than the usual Discovery 3 issues are there any V8 specific things I should look out for? From what I’ve read the petrol engine is much more reliable than the diesel. I have a daily driver for work so the MPG doesn’t worry me.
Cheers Jim (new member)
