I wouldnt be running the car at all until you have had land rover check the oil level.
Assume the D4 holds the same pathetic amount of oil as the D3? 5.5 litres, if so you have added 4 litres and are asking for serious engine damage.
The trucks have had the same set up for roughly 10 years and again its a real pita, you just cant beat a dipstick for simplicity, you wont believe the amount of times I have had to drain excess oil off!
Lots of mercs went this way in 2001 and there was a workshop dipstick available for about 20 quid, much faster to use.
The merc was though quite clever and could even tell when you had to much oil in the sump whilst driving along and this was a 2001 model.
firstly i would stop scare mongering, just read the hand book it tells you all you need to know

May have overfilled a bit there - I wouldn't drive it until you have checked it leaving it for about 20 mins
Not Available means just that - you need to wait about 20 mins on level ground to get a reading, it doesn't mean you are necessarily low
If you are over over (it will say overfilled) get it looked at without driving you will be OK

Cheers for the advice. Doh - just checked agin after 30 mins and yes, its showing full or at least at maximum. Now dilemma is ,is it overfilled. Most likely so i will find someone who can come and drain some out. Sweet lord no knowledge is dangerous but if the bloody display would just work, what the logic in waiting 30 minutes. Ffs...
The positive is i have not started the engine since adding the second 2 litres. I'll get a LR expert over to drain it or at least check it in morning.
Thanks guys

oil settles in the sump so you can get a correct reading
ps drain it and refill or leave alone and get someone who know what there doing

Thanks for quoting me out of context
Maybe I have it wrong but adding nearly 60/70 percent more oil than the engine needs has to be something to worry about, obviously if you consider it normal practice maybe not!

Thanks mate. Not sure who's quoting who out of context but i do appreciate everyones comments. Simple mistake but a naive one to say least. Will be rectified in morning. Oil drained and refilled. Hopefully the previous 2 litres has not damaged anything. Oil reading showing overfilled now.... Funny that

Kmca was not aimed at you
Geoff said above I was scaremongering, why Im not sure? my whole post was factual and an engine with to much oil in it is bad news, especially with the amount you are talking of.
I should know as I would wager a pint of warm ale I change more oil and filters than the rest of the forum combined and am quite fussy when it comes to levels.

BL F must be on holiday - the words 'oil'' 'overfill' and 'dipstick' would be music to his ears
