Numpty Report / Update
Had a very knowledgable Chap visit last night to replace oil.
1. Car in garage. We did not want to start the engine to raise car for obvious reasons ( way too much oil in it). This made it a little tighter underneath but doable when jacked up.
2. Belly pan / protective tray - very difficult to remove as locks were pretty much seized on or put on with some power!! Removed anyway, note - nicely lubricated for next time this needs done.
3. Sump plug removed and all oil drained into one of those flat oil trays
4. Plug added and tray refitted.
5. Engine top plastic cover kifted off.
6. New oil filter fitted.
7. 5.5 litres oil added.
8. Ignition on. No reading "unavailable"
9. Wait.... Add 1.5 litre message. 1.5 added. No update.... Eventually showing bang on half filled.
... Checked hour later. Same.
Now just checked this morning... "Overfilled". There is a possibility we added half litre too much. Sweet lord i know. Here are the stats from the book. rTFM .. Didnt someone say read the manual.
The book stated the capacity is 5.7 litres. The gap between minimum ans maximum is 1.5 litres only. So with oil filte etc defo no more than 6 should be added in my totally numpty opinion. . We may have tomdrsin just a little out but not today. It can sit for ankther day in the garage
Hope this is not annoying anyone but with good advice given to me from all of you i at leadt wanted to let you know where its at. I may need to start the engine to let it warm up, wait and get accurate reading but my guess is we've bloodywell added a little too much again. Note - add 6 litres max from scratch !!!!!

You put in 8.5 litres??
The oil change procedure has to be by the workshop manual.

Think we put in about 6 or 6.5 total. Anyway just waiting to check it again but will get a coupe of litres taken back out if he can come do it. Pain in backside but should have read manual, fired in 5.5 and left it at that.
Decided to start engine, let it heat up, settle for 20 minutes and check again. It now says its "ok" and gauge showing at max. Borderline maybe ...

My approach is to refill with a 5lt can of oil initially and go and have a cuppa tea. This showed a reading close to minimum on the dash indicator. Add another 1/2 lt, go for another cuppa. Read again, pour the remainder to take to 5.9lt (D4), after a while reading was 1 notch down from full. If you're measuring how much oil you're putting in you know you can't be far wrong D4 GS 12MY

Did you start it after the initial 5.5 Litres added?
It does look like you've added 7 litres - 5.5+1.5=7
Robbie said maybe 8.5 but that's reading the 1.5 twice I think.
It's certainly overfilled in my opinion - maybe the knowledgeable guy ain't Stew,

If you follow the workshop manual it also shows you how to turn the dash into a live display, rather than waiting. The best way though is to use a diagnostic tool to monitor the fill level and to reset the oil change service. Remember, the D4 monitors for oil level increase over time, as well as oil loss.
Here is mine, with 5.5 litres in it:

Even with the tried and tested dipstick would always check level 2 or 3 times and would seem the same approach is required with the electronic version.
First time I used and checked it said I needed 2 litres adding, found it hard to believe it had used that much in only 5k, added a 1 litre only and re checked 3 times. Result was full and correct level achieved, so have always been very cautious and added smaller amounts when using the electronic version.D4 Landmark MY16 Santorini Black THE LAST

Should be mm.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948
On checking the oil after collecting my new (to me D4) it was at min, so I topped her up - I made the mistake of overfilling but found my liquivac hose fitted exactly over the small drain pipe in the filler. Soon got her to the right level.

Can anybody point me in the direction of the workshop manual, or better still tell me how to get this live reading before I start topping up my oil later on?
Thanks
EDIT: Found it on AULRO forum..

As per the WSM, press the cruise control cancel button twice within 2 seconds if the display shows the level is N/A then go through the menus to have another look. Same process applies when topping-up to get an updated display

Is it asking you to add oil? Or are you doing a random top up?

8. Ignition on. No reading "unavailable"
9. Wait.... Add 1.5 litre message. 1.5 added. No update.... Eventually showing bang on half filled.
Furthermore, point 6. must be done before point 3. because when you unscrew the oil filter case, it release more or less 0,3-0,5 L of oil into the sump.....
My approach is (every 10.000km):
1. warm up the engine
2. remove oil filter
3. wait a 10 mins
4. remove the old oil using the vacuum pump and a graduated container for the sucked oil (I always get 5.8 - 6.0 L of discharged oil)
5. open (unroll) the filter and check if metal particles are present or not (perfectly clean oil filter until now)
6. fit the new oil filter
7. add 6.0 liters of new oil
I check the level same hours later or the day after, simply, 6 liters I removed, 6 liters I put back inside !!!!
The overfilling message never occurred!!!!
However, with the bonnet and driver's door open, press the "CAN" cruise control key twice, the oil level indicator will be immediately visible (workshop mode)Discovery 5 tdv6 HSE Corris Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition
