Each Disco when released has had it's detractors. The D3 was a slab sided London taxi lookalike only fit for Chelsea school runs some thought initially. The D4 was too like the previous D3. Now the D5 is too bland. Hardly any difference from a Range Rover. In truth, in the 4 years or so that the D5 has been around now, it still seems to do less than impress although the D4 crowd are hard to please for obvious reasons. But in reality, it will do whatever a D4 can and in some departments, more. But it just doesn't seem to be a Discovery to many.
So what is the natural replacement for a D4? Because they are only going to get older now. Possibly the new Defender? Maybe, I dunno. Or indeed, is the Discovery 4's type of vehicle now in terminal decline anyway?

I think the Grenadier will be an interesting package.
Perhaps too utilitarian to be the long distance cruiser that the D4 is, but too early to tell at the moment.

That is contrary to what I found, aside of course from having more up to date technology. Had it not been, I’d own one, as I suspect would the majority of other ex D3/4 owners who haven’t opted for the D5 as a replacement. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

That's not entirely true is it.
Build a box that you can just fit through the back door of a D4 and try putting it in a D5.

If you built a box that would fit in a D5 would it fit in the D4? (Not that I want a D5 having looked at them). PAGODA

Model upgrade (replacement) Poll.
Is the D5 the natural replacement for the D4? It seems not, as many D4 owners prefered to wait the arrival of the new Defender to make a choice.
In fact, it would be so interesting if someone in here could come up with a poll to see how many D3 owners moved to a D4 and how many D4 owners moved to a D5. The latter being around for nearly 4 years now, would make this poll very legitimate and informative.

What would it tell you though? Probably of at least, or likely more importance to LR is attracting new customers to the brand. For a measure of success, annual sales figures will likely provide all you need to know.

I don't like the D5 never really did but I did buy one 
Its no where near as practical for my needs, way to posh inside just had nearly 1k of interior trim sorted due to wear and crud damage and wasn't even a year old. They could have got away with calling it the Range Rover XL and people would have gone with it.
The D3/4 is way better, more versatile with a better interior for my use case. The Load space is a lot better too. The D5 has a bigger load floor, my D4 rubber mat is to short in both directions but its severely compromised from 20cm up by the body line. And don't get me started on the automatic boot and flap!
I wanted the defender but the boots too small for the dogs, I'm hoping they do release the 130 which has the makings of a very good D3 equivalent. MY06 S - Gone but not forgotten
