Discovery wont start or turn over with spare key |
|
Hi
i am new to this forum and discovery ownership so be patient with me! I have searched the forum for similar but cant find a post that fits the same problem or gives me a solution.
Bought my 2005 discovery on Tuesday and really like it. Went to use the spare key this morning and although it fits the ignition and allows ignition to turn on, it will not turn the engine over. I was in park so its not that. I tried the other key and it starts with no problems.
Is it to do with the rechargable key? other posts have said to use the key to recharge it, but i cant if the car wont start?
Does it need reprogramming or something?
Wary of going to the LR dealer and being charge for new key(s) when its not needed.
thanks
Katy

Did the key unlock the doors via remote central locking?
I'd say the battery is probably flat. Best thing to do is to start the car with the key which works, and then use sticky tape to fix the two keys together while the engine is running, so that the dead key gets charged.

Not sure to be honest, not done it myself (although I should as I have a dead key upstairs)
Not sure if the key loses its coding after being flat for too long, or if the batteries get so flat they cannot be recharged.
Hopefully someone will be along shortly to offer some more advice 2014 D4 XS

Any come back against the seller?
If not, leave the key taped for a while longer- you've nothing to lose as a new one from the dealer is over £100. Should you need one, ring Nick (parts manager at Yeovil Land Rover & forum sponsor) to get one with forum discount. Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana

Hi Katy,
I wonder if the spare key has been paired to your D3. The easiest way to check this (assuming the key battery is OK) is to try to lock & unlock the D3 with your spare key.
If this fails, I think you need to go to a dealer and get your keys "paired".
Let us know the result.
Best Wishes,

hi all
the key does not lock/unlock but it can turn the ignition on. It does not turn the engine over to start it. I assume this means it is paired, but has a flat battery?
Question is how long does it need to be taped to the other key to charge it? I only do short trips at the moment so maybe not long enough to charge the spare.
Trying not to have to go to LR as my experience with volvo main dealers is that they just replace rather than attempting to fix.
As far as come back with the dealer is concerned - is it not buyer beware? He is not a franchise dealer. The car has 6 months RAC warranty but pretty sure this will not cover keys!
any advice appreciated
katy.

I'd have thought that a couple of hours' close proximity would have induced enough charge to get it working.
To match your experience, I've a "dead" original key which also won't start the car (when unlocked with another key), so there must be some final electronic check before the engine will start.
Go back to the dealer and explain that the second key that they supplied with the car does not work and that you would like them to supply another or failing that, reimbursement of your cost in obtaining another; the problem some purchasers of second-hand cars have is the lack of a spare key. Don't let them tell you that you need to swap batteries- the fob is a sealed unit. Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana

Did you get this key re-programmed and did it fix the problem?
I have gone back to my dealer who told me it just needs reprogramming to the car. I rang my local LR dealer and they want to charge me £42.48 to reprogramme the key BUT they say it might not work. If it does not i will have to buy a new key as well at an additional £200 cost.
Typical. Is it worth reprogramming the old key or go straight for a new one?
thanks

No; I tried a battery replacement, but that only worked for a few weeks, indicating that it was the charging circuit that had broken.
I'm not aware of any reason why a key would "lose" its association with the car, thereby requiring reprogramming.
You don't say whether the dealer is taking responsibility; if he is, just get him to decide on the course of action. IIRC, you can get a key supplied from the factory which is cut & coded to the car for less than £150. Alternatively, if you're paying, you might try eBay (or forum member Big Dave who had a few) for a fob & swap the blade (pin at hinge) before getting the LR dealer or an Independent with the appropriate diagnostic kit to program it to the cR.
