Dodgy MOT History

I’m looking at a D4 HSE Lux on Saturday.
It looks to be in great condition and has a full Land Rover Service history.
The dealer is non-franchised.

However when I do an MOT History on it there appears to be something dodgy going on.
It has a normal 65yr plate on it, not a private plate.

Current mileage on the vehicle is showing as 46,350 miles.
This is backed up by the LR service history, which I’ve seen a copy of, the last entry was 46,110 on the 9th Oct 2019.

The MOT history is:
27/12/18 - 47,716 miles
15/10/19 - 74,386 miles

I’ve asked the dealer to explain it and he’s investigating.

I could understand it if the car was wearing a private plate and the MOT history was for the plate not the car, but it’s not.

So is there any way this could be legit?
A MOT system mistake, or If it has had a private plate on it?

I'm tempted not to even look at it.

Thanks

Nasher.

Could have been a mistake when the MOT tester entered the numbers for the mileage.

I'd accept that for one error, but two mileage errors would have me passing on by.

I would want to see the V5, and have the contact details for the previous owner, to discuss with them, failing which I'd walk away.

You might publish details of the car here, someone might know it; likewise the dealer.

Good luck.

Hi,
as above ^ one typo may be but two, something does not add up Confused

if V5 Not available contact the dealer that did the services to try and check via that route
if you start to get brick walls walk away

When I bought our FL2 I phoned the main dealer who were the only ones to ever service it, as a one owner car and they gave a full detailed breakdown of all work and parts, more details than the owner even knew Shocked Laughing

I have bought a car, but not a very expensive one, that had 2 MoT mileage readings that were based on km readings rather than miles but registered as miles on the system. All the evidence corroborated it being the case.

The first one was a mistake and the second one was the MoT tester 'being consistent'.
Pretty sure MoT data can't be changed once it is on the system even if it is incorrect.

However, with a pricey car I'd want to do digging, and have it written down in case it caused problems when it comes to sale time again.

74386 km is 46221 miles could it have been recorded in km rather than miles?

Thanks Guys.

i've had a chat with the dealer who's selling the car again this evening.

He's spoken to the owner and the explanation sort of ties in with what has been suggested on here.

He used the car purely for travelling to his house in France, and did far more miles in France than the Uk so had everything set to Kms most of the time.
He apparently never thought until I asked the question that the MOT man would read the trip meter in Kms.

So, the question is, can the driver easily change the readout to Kms?

It would appear easy for an MOT tester to just read the trip meter and not notice the Kms instead of miles.

I have now been given the VIN number and LR service history, so will be contacting the dealer who's been servicing it to see what they have to say.

Yes, it’s possible and a trivial change - anyone can do it. See this video https://youtu.be/8tgznpRoWW8

Just a thought, you are doing the donkey work now and if you buy it all well and good, until you come to sell it, then prospective buyers may not be so keen to do the leg work and may be put off

Don't worry, I've already mentioned that concern to the dealer, and told him that if I proceed I will not be paying the screen price for that reason. He's agreed we can discuss the price.

The way I see it, if I get 3 MOTs on it in miles, and get confirmation from LR that they read the mileage from the ECU when they serviced it, the difference it will make to the price I sell it for in 3yrs will be lass than the saving I can make now because of it.

I don’t see it as an issue for selling if you mention it in a future advert. Especially if you state the mileage next to the Km reading.

Don't know how the system works but if the next MOT guy enters a figure in miles that is less than the previously recorded miles won't that throw up a problem??
