I left the car in my drive with the engine running, and all doors closed.
When I returned less than a minute later all doors were locked.
I wouldn't have been able to get into the car, save for the fact that SWMBO was in the passenger seat waiting for me.
She denies locking the doors - any logical explanation of why this happened, and how I can prevent it reoccurring?

I seem to recall you can do this by pressing the locking lever on the door (the bit that's integrated with the opening handle), and it's easy to do this by brushing against it as you exit. Shutting the door completes the disaster.
I've done this myself with the engine running and my kids strapped into their seats Luckily I was still at home and could get hold of the second key. Since that frightener I never close the drivers door with the engine running.Dr. Ian Malcolm:

1. If leaving the car with the engine/electrics switched on at home etc then i always leave the drivers window open, our drive is on a slope and the door will often shut itself. As the D3 does not have any systems that close the windows without human interaction this guarantees being able to gain access to the vehicle even if the doors lock themselves.
2. If it is not safe to leave the window open, it is probably not safe to leave the door unlocked with the key in the ignition either I believe that every human has a finite number of heart-beats. I don't intend to waste any of mine running around doing exercises.

stapldm I seem to recall a post from someone who'd replaced a door lock, saying that the new one had an extra plastic tab to stop you locking the door like this when it's open. I guess that's why - agree it's scary!
