the dreaded farting sound from gas cap

I am new to the Land Rover world, but have jumped in blindly, am an Audi guy to.

I am getting the farting sound from the gas cap, the vacuum in the tank then it blows the gas cap valve.

the local dealer told me it is more than likely the dmtl valve which is now replaced but it still makes the farting sound. i have searched and read through many threads but i havent found much in terms of concrete answers.

plugged evap canister? or faulty purge valve (the purge valce does tick when the engine is running)? any thoughts?

When are you getting this sound and what exactly do you mean by the phrase "gas cap"?

The only reference I've ever heard to farting is after parking up the suspension vents to level the car. This usually happens just as you're walking away having locked the car. Does this sound familiar?
If this is the sound you're hearing and I've understood correctly by "gas cap" you mean fuel filler cap, I think you could be mistaken thinking that this has anything to do with the fuel filler cap. Rolling Eyes

with engine running (after 5 minutes from cold start) there is a farting noise coming from the gas cap every 30 seconds to 1 minute. it appears to be the gas cap releasing vacuum pressure.

if (with engine running) i remove the gas cap there is a huge vacuum sound. so i am thinking its the gas cap safety release valve popping with excess vacuum.

The dealer told me to replace the dmtl valve so i had it done at the dealer. and still makes the noise.

the following thread has the same issue with no result: http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic126996.html

Sounds like a totally different fart. Mr. Green

Good luck with resolving it.

Is it worth changing the cap itself to eliminate it from the equation? It might be operating a too lower pressure.

A bad purge valve would be top of the list.

The farting noise is a good thing and is the vehicle protecting the fuel tank from collapsing. When you drive the fuel will be warm and the amount of vacuum in the tank will increase. When you park in cooler conditions the fuel volume decreases which increases the pressure difference, so it farts to save itself and prompts the owner to get it fixed.

I had a Vauxhall Midi van years ago, a main dealer sold me the wrong (none vented) replacement fuel filler cap. The vacuum completely collapsed the fuel tank, it ended up looking like a screwed up crisp bag!

I will look further into testing the purge valve, all though touching it reveals it is clicking but valve could be stuck i suppose.

ok pulled the purge valve, checked and tested and its good. im still baffled with this one.
so far ive been told:
-possible vent valve on top of fuel tank
-possible dtml ( just replaced)
-possible carbon canister

im kind at a loss here with this one.

From this point on you really need a smoke machine to see what is going on.
