Drive car betweens flushes (gearbox double flush)?

Hi,

I want to doubleflush my gearbox today.
Do I just drain te oil, fill it up again, and do the same again?

Or do I need to drive the car between te flushes?

You need to start the car to push the old oil out of the system after the first empty/re-fill, but you don't need to drive it to do that. Maybe just leave it in gear for a minute or so (with your foot on the brake obviously) Thumbs Up

On previous (lesser) gearboxes when doing the double flush, it was recommended to slowly move through the gears with the engine idling i.e. R N D 4 3 2 1 2 3 4 D N R N D 4 3 2 1 with 30 seconds in each gear. This ensured that each of the labyrinth channels in the control block were flushed along with each associated control valve. This is a good thing as the new oil is like a solvent and excellent for stripping out varnish and residue left by the old oil, so it's nice to do that with the oil that's coming back out rather than the second lot of oil you leave in.

I don't know if this is possible in this car without it moving though; just 'cos you command shift into 5th whilst stationary doesn't mean it's in 5th mechanically, it just means you've asked for 5th and the 'box will do that when the parameters are right for it to do so without damage. Ever tried shifting into reverse whilst still travelling forwards (at idle) ? If you're going above about 2MPH it simply won't engage and you'll keep moving forwards until you slow down. Tap the brake to slow, or wait until friction slows you and it'll engage. The display still says R throughout this.

Does GTR have any further advice, or is there a manual valve control screen on the dealer diagnostics that can flush the labyrinth?

One for our resident site super-techs I think?

you also need to make sure the gear oil is below 30c before you drain.

Double flush procedure :

Confirm transmission oil is below 30c
Drain & refill
Run engine with gear selector in "P" for 3mins at 1750rpm
Stop engine, confirm oil temperature is below 30c before draining
Refill

I like Doms version as I can see the logic in getting rid of more of the older oil, but it may be that the d3 gearbox effectively does that by itself in clearing all the channels? Thumbs Up

Same for the locking rear diff - it says its sealed for life but as you are responsible for the fluids in the car if it fails beacuse the fluid has degraded then not covered under warranty Confused

I would think Dunc that you are right for 'user serviceable' fluids but as units such as the gearbox and diffs are designed to be SFL then your responsibility under warranty is only to report any perceived fault to your servicing dealer Thumbs Up

Not what my dealer said though. I asked about them checking the diff fluid - service reception said Sealed for life but the service manager happended to be passing and disagreed - he said if the diff failed and LR could prove it was due to bad fluid then no warranty. Rolling Eyes

Given all the water, mud and sand wading I have done I changed the oil myself. It certainly wasnt as clean as the oil i put in.. I came to the conclusion that it was worth doing just incase - the hassle I may have got and the cost, if the diff had failed wasnt worth it.

But it all went to waste anyway as 6months later the halfshaft seals failed and it was done again, out of warranty at £20 per litre Shocked This time the oil was brown Shocked

Although i changed all my DIFF. fluids and T-case not a long a go,at 70.ooo miles, my manual says:

Diff.oil needs to be changed at 120.000 KM(75.000 miles) or 60 monts.Says nothing about" sealed for life"

T-case oil -same as Diffs.

Transmission fluid-every 10 years which in my case might mean sealed for my life since I drink booze every day. Embarassed Shocked Whistle

Every time i ask My indy mechanic regarding tranny's fluid change , he looks like me like that Shocked and says that we should not touch that unless is Censored Big Cry and it is very complicated, you have to watch for certain temp. and recheck and recheck and..... Thud .why is it so complicated that i should not touch that at all?/? Confused
