Drove around North Yorkshire in a fair bit of snow last winter on standard 19" Pirellis and had no problems at all.2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

18" wheels, manul box, Pirellis', foot deep snow, rural scotland - no probs. Needed low ratio and off road height to get going a few times but very impressive...and the TR on ice setting had the most amazing ABS. Not like my Audi Quattro where stopping is the main issue on snow.
Dog - couldn't agree more, last winter in my Audi I tried for nearly half a mile on a really gently but icy slope to stop sliding down the hill. Brakes no use at all especially when you get the brake failure red alarm and message ABS Fail - Audi Service
Even got the car into reverse to try and stop the slide. In the end hand brake turned to point up hill and used the kurb to stop - friggin thing was usleess in the snow, truely useless !!

This has nothing to do with the car. ANY vehicle of a similar size / weight would have been the same

We are talking here about braking - unless the snow is more than 6" deep then my Audi is just as good as the Disco3 for traction but the Disco3 ABS is just so good for stopping whereas the Audi is just like any other car - practically impossible to stop.
My Audi quattro has switchable ABS for turning off in snow 8)

Last winter, myself, RLD, 10forcash, and qzdcq went for a play in a local Peak District playground known as Goyt Valley.
The defining feature is steep in, steep out! a real 'normal' car trap. There is a long straight hill into the valley 20% slope, about 1/2 mile long, but dead straight. Whilst waiting for the others, I witnessed a Jag X-Type (4x4) toboganning down the slope, he passed me at about 40mph sideways- sh*t-on-a-rope!. He took the ditch option.
All the D3's used HDC in Grass Gravel Snow (except QZDCQ cos' he did not know about it at the time apparently) and all went down the icy slope without drama, and stopped halfway down. RLD recovered the Jag, and then towed the remains back up the 20% slope, no drama at all.
That one day in the snow convinced me that the D3 is an extremely good setup in snow and ice, the HDC is simply brilliant, and takes the human element out of stopping on ice.
If HDC won't stop it, nothing short of a wall will, but at least you will be able steer into it!

Either its over ten years old (a proper five cylinder quattro?) or you just pop a fuse?

Superb! They were absolutely awesome; a proper rally car.
Brings back great memories of standing in the pitch black and snow in Kielder Forest on the RAC rally. Now that was a proper rally, not the commercialised rip off that they run around south wales these days.
Shame you don't get to use it more JMC.

Proper rallies, with proper cars, in proper snow, ahhh them were the days
I've got an original Audi promo video somewhere, of the original Quattro with Michelle Mouton driving it in deep snow in Finland. I'll see if I can dig it out.
Had been my intention (for the past 10 years) to do the Classic Monte this year as a 25year celebration of the marque. However, time, money, work, wife etc etc all took their toll on the idea. Never mind, might manage to do a Golden Monte run in 2031
