DRIVING IN SNOW ON REGULAR TYRES
Has anyone tried driving on snow using the regular 19 inch tyres that are supplied on the UK spec HSE? Just wondering if I need to spend money on chains.....

If you are going to be driving in London then I wouldn't waste the money. How often do you get enough snow to worry about
This IS snow, and I don't imagine you will have seen anything like it 'dawrn sourf' Standard road tyres got me to the photo point and I have never used chains
I recall once in '87 seeing a taxi in Dartmouth with snow chains on. There was about 2cm of snow on the ground but everybody went into a panic

just remember that your problems won't be moving in snow - it'll be stopping
Every winter I see the "invincibles" in their XC90s, X5s, etc barreling along the motorway in a blizzard where you cannot see where the road is, only the barrier dividing the carriageway - they're doing normal speed. Sadly, most don't come a cropper.

I sooooooo looking forward to snow. Unfortunately that is quite rare in S Wales.
NOOOOO no snow please. Last winter it started before x-mass and went away only in March!
and broke my ancle in the snow... Couldn't drive my honey for three months !
And with 30cm of snow in the farden, the rabbits had easy acces to all the njamy njamy and ruined many young trees and plants....
With the fence around the garden I managed to keep out the deer that first come for left apples and than continue to eat tree when the apples are finished.
Before the fence was fully closed (some openings well known to the deer), I used to scare away dear with the previous car (xtrail) or a atv. I once did it on foot and running from one end of the garden to the other about 5 times in deep snow was enough to decide to do it by car. With the atv I killed one deer; it ran into the fence and boke it's neck...

If you're going to drive on snow frequently (for 2-3 months for me) then snow tyres are excellent.
Exactly, we drive on 4 wheels whereas most cars only on 2.
But as each car, we brake on 4 wheels. And sometimes this is not enough.
Braking is when you need winter tires. And the difference is big. For acceleration I wouldn't bother too much unless you live in a hilly, snowy regeion.
After all, investment into winter tires is only an investment - not a cost. I mean the money you spend on them won't be lying in the bank and won't bring any interest; that's a certain loss. On the other hand, while you are wearing off your winter tires, your summer tires are lying somewher without wear&tear. So your summer tires will last much longer.
The only real cost is changing the rubber on the alloy: money and time. Unless you want to invest in a second or third set of alloys.
