Driving license medical

Just received my plastic driving license renewal at 70 form, it appears to renew classes C1, C1E, D1 and D1E I have to take a medical and an eye test, as a D3 with a caravan or trailer comes under D1E class can anyone confirm or elaborate, does this mean a private medical? Will my local NHS doctor do this and what is the charge likely to be? Or am I reading it wrong?

Er, a D3 with a trailer is B+E, not D1+E, isn't it? It's not a minibus Confused

It is debatable depending on the weight of the trailer, t3.5 appears to be the max weight on a BE class license, please tell me I am wrong!

Only B+E - no nonsense if you don't want or need to preserve your C license do it online as no medical needed just a self declaration of fitness - I've done it three times now! Crying or Very sad

Assuming you have a pre-1997 licence Wink you can drive a combination of up to 8.25 tonnes according to: https://www.gov.uk/towing-with-car

The 3.5 tonne limit applies to the prime mover - in this case your D3 which whilst a heavy car it is nowhere near 3.5 tonnes.

Thank for the help guys, I understand it now (I think) it's the typical .gov wording that threw me and the fact I am "entitled" to tow a trailer without taking a test. I still can't do it on line as their server seems to be have got a touch of "D3 electronic syndrome" Rolling with laughter

thanks for this link....currently we (at work) are assessing the issue of a tracer with bowser attached being used on a public road for access.

+1 and your photocard should have a code 107 and/or 119 next to the entitlement to confirm.

Hi,

I have just received the same renewal forms for my D/L + 70, and I thought the same need to keep C1+E and D1+E because of Disco 4 and twin Axle Van combined weight, when I waded through the various D/L Q & A found that because I passed my driving test in the 1960's I am entiltled to drive up to 8.25 tons so just re apply giving up C1 & D1 classifications if you are unlikely to drive a lorry or a bus anymore, just answer the medical questions without the need of seeing your Doctor or Optician, thus avoiding medical fees.

Hi I passed my test in 1960 when I renewed my driving licence at 70 I required no medical just answer
the questions on the form, I had to quote my passport number so they could obtain a photo of me
(I had the old paper licence) to fit onto a new photo licence. This was all done on line.
I had to return my old licence.
All done at no charge.

The only difference on the new licence is that I now cannot drive any vehicle cover 3500kg, I can still tow any size or weight of trailer/caravan.

If you want to drive a vehicle over 3500kg ( i.e motorhome ) which weighs more than 3500kg you have to apply for a C I category on your licence which means filling in a D2 and a D4. plus getting a medical from your doctor and optician The DVLA
will send all the info and forms.
