Driving with 265 70 17 Tyres fitted

Still trying to decide on which off road rubber to go for, I am drawn to the BFG AT's in 265 70 17 as I don't want to swap the wheels on and off for on/off road (hence ruled out the Maxxis Bighorn).

Anyone run with this size tyre that can let me know how the car drives and handles on them? I know they are slightly oversize so it will perhaps feel under geared but any first hand experience would be welcome.

TIA

I run this size on my mine - you may recall looking at them on the D3 Tong day.

I use them mainly off-road admittedly (I've a newish set of Wranglers I keep for heavy road miles) but I still do a fair amount of tarmac miles on them. I kept them on throughout the winter just gone.

I've found they're a little more noisy and not quite so sure footed under heavy braking / cornering than the Wranglers but I expect that. It's certainly not enough to give me any cause for concern and I don't really hang about.

I've had no problems with rubbing (mine's a 2005 MY).

The biggest PITA I've had is storing the spare - I usually just put it in the boot but I'm going to start deflating it and putting it underneath.

Hope this is of help.

The aspect on the last part of the clip is exaggerated by the camera angle. Still, it looks like a great day out. 8)

Just a thought: if you going to do those kind of steep climbs you might want to consider rollover protection.

I've never seen a D3 with rollover protection. Is it because the monococque passenger shell construction and airbags makes it unnecessary? I remember seeing photos of a rollover on the forum a couple of years ago. The car was a write-off but the passenger shell was intact.

Any experts out there?

ISTR the internal shell/role cage is made of boron steel or something else damn strong, so short of driving off a cliff it should be up to the job Thumbs Up (not that I'd want to prove it Shocked )

Hi CFB,
I run 265/70R17 BFG A/Ts as my permanent tyre.

I have coils and so the level was probably equivalent to "normal" height. I found that the rear tyres rubbed the front of the wheel arch when off road. I now have lifted springs and have no problems.

I suspect that with air suspension, you would have no difficulties.

Best Wishes,
Peter

CFB, you can get a 265/65/17 AT in a Bridgestone, the 65 profile
would be with in 5mm of the STD tire diameter and should fit easily
in the carrier, the 70 profile is difficult to get in. There is a rumor here
that BFG are now doing this size.

I've just seen AT2's on offer in 245/70/17 and BFG AT's in 245/75/17, reckon both would be a better 'fit'. Still expensive though and maybe i should go back to looking at the Maxxis MT's as they are under £80 a corner!!

I used to think that my 265/70/17's did not touch the front of the rear inner guards. In normal road conditions, or softy offroading that is true. But once you start getting extreame and loaded axle articulation, you are guaranted to kiss the plastic inner guar, up againts the body seam fold that is behind the inner guard.
Having said that, the extra clearance you get of the larger tyres is well worthwhile. I am about to get a weekend set of Kumho KL71's in the this size, so I will let you know how I go.

Does it touch enough to damage the tyre or wear away the guard?

It will be going off road a lot.

Haven't seen any tyre damage. However the plastic arch has now a thin slit in it from where the tyre rubbed.
