Duratrac v GG AT3 v Pirelli Scorpion Zero All Season

Hoping for some advice for tyres on a late D4 2012.

I need a more aggressive tyre, mainly road biased, but we are high up on the Quantock Hills in West Somerset, narrow single-lane roads and do catch the weather, and roads invariably muddy in winter and lots of leaves here

Occasion use on stony gravel tracks and in fields at shows with the horse trailer. I am limited to purchase as have 20-inch wheels.

Choices come down to Duratracs or GG AT3 in 255x55x20 or Pirelli Scorpion Zero All Season.

Any major problem with Duratracs, such as fuel economy, or grip in wet? I only do 5-6000 miles p.a. but on hazardous Somerset lanes. Don't want to over do the off-road capabilities if the Scorpion All Season are okay? Currently on standard Scorpion Zero's.

Appreciate thoughts

What have you got at the moment and have they ever failed you?

I only ask from the point of view that I'm running 255/50R20 Scorpion Zeros and had originally intended to change to 18" wheels with something more aggressive but having just spent a weekend green laneing in Mid/North Wales there was nothing I couldn't do and on a couple of occasions with less drama than some of the Defenders.

I ran 275/45/20 GG AT3 on my D4 and never had a an issue (and that's living in rural Scotland...)

Thank you Moleshome and Nigel the cat. Current tyres are Scorpion Zero's and dont feel they are what I need where we live.

I am concerned about overkill with the Duratracs, and possibly the reviews I have seen re noise and missing or damaged blocks. I think I am leaning to the GG AT3's, only doubt is that I ran GG AT2's on my two D3's and was not happy on wet roads.

Much of my driving is up and down steep hills here and heavy braking required at times in our tiny lanes, on slippy surfaces. Its a difficult choice, again, as always!

Appreciate your replying

Nice aggressive tread pattern and I found them ok noise wise on long trips (Aberdeenshire to Essex and back on a regular basis)

Hi,

On my second set of Duratracs on 19" rims.....

Second hand rims are plentiful, so don't limit your choice to 20" ......

Cheers

Any mods required to use them Nige? No problems in access height?

GG AT3 is an excellent AT for mostly road use. Works well in snow, for example, but all most tyres it'll struggle in certain conditions e.g. icy tarmac or a layer of slime on tarmac. But otherwise I found them to be a very good AT on my RRS in 255/55/19 size. Quiet, works well in the rain, good grip on dry tarmac.

Have Duratracs (19inch) on one and GG AT3 (20) on the other and I would say the Duratracs are better. I am slightly biased as I had to replace three AT3's because the early ones 275/45/20 had sidewalls like cream cheese. The newer AT3's come in 255/55/20 and are better and offer a better ride than the 45's.

Still on balance I think the Duratracs are a better tyre, they have done 28K and are 6.5mm all round.

19 inch Duratracs here, laning, snow, rain, wet grass, never had an issue.

Had seriously considered swapping my AT3’s to Duratecs, they look and sound a fantastic tyre.
But what put me off is that they’re only Q (99mph) rated for the 20’s, whilst my AT3’s are V (149mph) ……. not that I travel at either of these speeds (or those in between or above).
It’s just that if a tyre were to “let go” at motorway speeds, imo the Q would let go first.
Confused

Thank you for all of your input. Seems that all have good experiences with GG AT3s and Duratracs, so matter of choice.

Hi RonP,

I called my insurance who had no issue with Duratracs and Q rating. I do very little motorway driving but you raise a good point.

In the same issue, re safety, on both my D3's which were on GG AT2's, they had worn the rim on the alloy so thin, then the tyre fitter said we were lucky not to have had a major issue and feel ourselves lucky!

Difficult.

I’m running two sets of rims/tyres at the moment, GG AT3 & Pirelli Verdre All Seasons. Both in 20” as that’s the smallest I can fit on my model FFRR.

If you’re not going to encounter deep mud off road, the All Seasons combined with correct use of the TR system will be more than sufficient.

I managed one wet winter (2019) of regular weekly off road use with just the All Seasons. I never actually got stuck but had a couple of tense moments, which is why I got a set of GG AT3.

If you watch the Harry Metcalfe video that was recently posted on here, he ran his new Defender 90 off road on his farm on All Seasons and was amazed!

The All Seasons are quieter and more fuel efficient than any of the AT options. Thumbs Up

Hi Canburne. Was much of this on-road or off-road? Would be interested to know.
