EGR blanking caused MOT failure |
|
I know it’s been a discussion point before.
My Disco 3 failed mot today because the EGR has been blanked off and some pipework removed.
I guess this constitutes modification although it sailed through the emmision test.
I’ve priced up the parts to replace and it’s quite staggering ££££
Has anyone got round this ?
I’ll be searching eBay tonight but not knowing what’s missing will be half the problem 😥

Mine also failed for blanked EGR's. It depends how much your garage is prepared to look the other way. My garage is a reputable Land Rover specialist in the area and basically said if they pass it, it will be their necks on the line if they are found out. That's fair really.
Luckily I had the pipes from when I blanked it. I refitted them with the blanks on the EGR valve and passed the MOT.
If you don't want the cost of buying pipes I suspect you will need to find another garage to pass it.

Problem I guess if I do an mot check elsewhere it will come up as shown failed on the MOT system now it’s s on line ?
Won’t they just take note from that and fail it accordingly.

Middle of 2018, whole raft of things changed, basically they seem to be dumbing down the test.
Blanked egr with pipes all in place is fine as the mot guy simply cant tell the blank plates are fitted, blanked egr with no pipes is the issue here.

Are you suggesting that the Jag ones will fit ?
I guess they just need to be present to the MOT guy
Get this - they were £43 a side for genuine LR but they hiked the price to over £145 plus VAT each side once it became evident these were an MOT issue 😡😩

It’s the same engine so there is a 95% chance they will fit.

I’m not the gospel on this and I may have this wrong, but as I understand...
It became a specific test requirement last year, but in fact removing or disabling the EGR has been illegal for many years. According to the DVSA, the Road vehicles (construction and use) regulations (Regulation 61a(3) specifies that it is against the law to tamper with anything that alters the emissions of the vehicle. Removal of an EGR valve, diesel particulate filter etc. will almost invariably contravene these requirements, making the vehicle illegal for road use.
The potential penalties for failing to comply with Regulation 61a are fines of upto £1000 for a car or £2500 for a light goods vehicle (hence Commercial D3s). Plus insurance issues no doubt where the insurer will set aside any future claim on the basis that you were not free from illegality when you entered the insurance contract.
Removing Cats, DPFs etc is very awkward territory. Many do it though.
The previous owner of my car has done it (EGR plate) but specifically the law states that it is illegal to tamper with it. I haven’t. I inherited the car like that when I bought it and have not tampered with it since then. Indeed if I take the blanking plate out, it will be me who has then tampered - I’m leaving it well alone!!
I may be wrong, but I think this was covered in Car Mechanics magazine some time ago. Honest John’s blog refers to the very same.

Yes mot inpectors must do a quick inspection without removing covers to see if the emissions systems have been interfeared with.
