EGR Blanking Question
Hi everyone,
I've been reading the many posts on EGR issues and the procedures for blanking etc. The last week or so my 05 Disco3 seemed down on power and gave a bellow of black smoke when setting off quickly from junctions. This coincided with it's service being due, so in it went to my local specialist. Diagnostic report shows both EGR's are faulty and he has quoted £500 to replace both. Is that price reasonable?
Also, with reading all the topics, I can't see any disadvantages noted for blanking the valves. Does it slightly increase the emissions? Has anyone had any trouble getting a car fitted with the blanks through an MOT? I'm just wonderign why they're fitted in the first place - is it overkill by LR to achieve slightly better emissions ratings?
Only place I can find that sells the blanking kit is Bell Auto Services for £50 - has anyone used this kit?
Apologies if I'm asking questions that have already been answered but I did read just about all of the EGR info that came up on my forum search.
Cheers!
Rich.

Our Disco seemd to display the same symptoms recently. I took it to Duckworths in Lincolnshire they diagnosed both EGR valves along with other parts. I considered blanking off the EGRs and even bought a pair of blanking plates from Ebay but decided against fitting them, I also spoke to Bells as they are in York not too far to travel and they will fit them for £100.
Anyway we decided to have the work done at Duckworths which was not cheap, but a local 4x4 and Land Rover specialist was only just less! The result is the car is a lot smoother to drive, better acceleration and no sudden surge as the turbo kicks in! Plus with the bushes, ball joints and tracking its much firmer on the road.
Hope this is of some help.

I have had a BAS kit fitted to my car for almost a year now with no problems whatsoever. It sailed through it's last MOT (back in September) and the results of the smoke test they did were no different than the results of those from the year before so emissions seem unaffected by the mod. £50 is a lot more reasonable than the £500 for replacing the valves
I'm sure someone will be on soon to say that you could blank the valves for 4p A 2p piece on each valve does the trick but this does not address disabling the butterfly valve.
The job is reasonably straightforward and the kit should come with instructions but yopu might want to cast an eye over this http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/albums/use...0SMALL.pdf first .Now an ex-D3 owner after 7 happy years. Miss the car but not the big bills

Thanks for the responses guys. I'm based in Hull so if Bell Autos in York can do it for £100 and I don't even have to get my hands dirty then that seems like a good option. Do they also clear the diagnostic faults after fitting the blanks? I'm just concerned about the ECU limiting the performance if it's still giving the fault codes. Suppose I could always get my local specialist (who did the service) to fit the blanks and re-do the diagnostics check. I'm sure he'll try to steer me in the direction of the 500 quid replacements!!

Hi Lee, mine's a silver HSE with side steps and a 'HSE' plate - and currently going a bit slow with occasional plumes of smoke out the back! I'll keep an eye out for you....
Just spoke to the guy who did my service, and he said he's heard of the blanking procedure, but that he wouldn't carry it out, mainly because he's an ex-Landrover mechanic and only services/repairs in accordance with LR guidelines. Fair enough. Looks like I'll be giving bells a call.
Incidentally, while you're there, ask him about his remap service for the D3 - guaranteed permagrin! Now an ex-D3 owner after 7 happy years. Miss the car but not the big bills

Got it booked into Bell's tomorrow morning. If I get there for 8am and let it cool for an hour, they only charge 1hr labour. Can't argue with that. I take it Andy Bell is of Bells auto services? I'll definitely be asking them about the remap service, once I've had the EGR's sorted, and see how it runs for a while. I've been getting about 22mpg, even on good runs so I'm hoping general performance and economy picks up a bit.
Thanks for all the replies guys!

EGRs are only invented to get cars through the very tough Euro emissions standards which it will not need to meet for MOT time. What they do is feed exhaust gasses back into the intake when you lift off the throttle or at lower revs thus burning any unburn fuel and NOX. In the long term this results in the tarring up of the inlet tract and also you have increased maintenance of the EGR valves themselves which in ALL makes of car suffer as the valve operates within the very hot exhaust gas area.
If your vehicle is thus out of warranty and your insurer is aware of the mod you will have a better performing car (not eating it's own gasses and better rev response) with the added benefit of lower maintenance with no chance of them going wrong.
Hope that helps. If out of warranty and Insurers aware definitely blank off...your engine will love you for it.

Why's that DG?
Is it because >= MY07 will still get an engine failure error if the blanked off valve still goes wonky?

No Paul ..well maybe
No what I mean is for 2007MY on it's wrong to suggest that the EGR's are only there for emission control ....from then on the EGR system also has a wax thermostat fitted to promote faster engine warm-up and improve cabin heater performance 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021
