Can anyone advise what is causing the above problem and how to fix it?

Check your brake lights, odd as it may seem it caused this to happen on mine. Despite the bulbs working, the filaments were touching and causing all sorts of errors.

I have heared of the same thing with Defenders. The reason was oil in the intercooler which was somehow sucked in by the engine to keep it running. Don´t ask me the details of how it works, but it does. I had my intercooler cleaned on my Defender for that reason. Life in the slow lane
