Electric Cooling fan disintegrating

I've just been told that my cooling fan has been losing fragments from the tips, and so needs replacing.

The new one is £285-00 or so... If it needs one, then so be it. Better that than blades flying in the engine bay.

There's nothing coming up on a search of the D4 tech. forum, so does anyone have any experience of this happening before? Had one replaced?

Who told you? Main dealer or LR authorised service centre or someone else?

The bearing

My Indy mentioned it this afternoon.. haven't seen it yet, but will certainly take a look at the one he takes off.
I know my way around enough to know if I'm being fobbed off.

I wondered if anyone else has had a failure?

I've seen quite a few where the garage doesn't fit the air intake properly, or leaves the securing bolt loose and that then rips into the blades.

Haven’t heard of any disintegrating on their own accord....

Thanks for the heads up on that- it gives me something to look for.
Hopefully it's old damage that he's found from a previous mechanic.
I'll be interested to see quite how bad the bearings are on the old one tho'. I'll report back.

Collecting car tomorrow after Left inlet manifold replacement, Rear upper tailgate fix, & the fan replacement.
The Indy came recommended, and they seem like good giys. Have a good name locally.

Cooling Fan Bearing..

I took a look at the fan that was removed and kept it. The bearing has play, and the blades have been clearly nibbling at the surround. This isn't something that I've seen mentioned anywhere else, so maybe worth checking yours..
If you don't know how to check:
Grab the centre of the viscous unit and rock in all planes. (feeling for movement by holding the plastic blades won't tell you anything.. Wink )
