this is from gregsgarage.

I have recently taxed 2 EV's. I would recommend that you get the car MOT'ed after the conversion and insured. Then go to your local DVLA office with your V5C document, MOT and insurance documents. You also need to bring supporting evidence of the conversion, receipts for major components and pictures also help, try and get one that clearly shows the number plate and electric bits. Also if the car is newer than 2001 (check date, could be wrong) you will need a receipt/letter from the "company" that carried out the conversion. Be creative here if this applies.

With all of the above paperwork the DVLA local office will have to issue a free tax disc. They will take copies of your receipts, photos and send that to Swansea along with your V5C document (for change of taxation class and fuel type). They may ask for an inspection later and will arrange an appointment if required.

It will probably take some time, but be patient, friendly and don't leave until you have your tax disc. Very Happy

Renewals should be able to be done online or at the post office were they will probably ask, "do you want 6 or 12 months tax?"

Where there’s a will (and money) there’s a way.

I do understand the challenge and satisfaction etc. 👍

But why bother? The cost would far exceed the savings and benefits of the conversion and the value of the vehicle would plummet.

If it’s something you’ve set your heart on doing, then you have my admiration and respect. Good luck.

Things must of changed as i was told by the DVLA that they didnt recognise electric convertions but that was about 8 years ago.

Edinburgh is reported to be considering banning all vehicles (diesel and petrol) which were built more than 5 years ago. It's the thin end of the wedge and I can only see other LAs following suit. Until there's a capable alternative to the Disco, electrification might be worthwhile.

I’m guessing a lot of the ECUs do a system check when you turn on the ignition but don’t actually start the car, so they should be fairly straight forward to sort out with an EV conversion. Probably the combined knowledge on here would easily sort all the physical issues and most of the other problems and a good computer hacker who has a passion for Landrovers would sort the rest just for fun.

I think things have moved on.I guess its the same as when you Std modify a Land Rover into a 'commercial'..

I agree..

I think things are only going to get harder for fossil fuel powered vehicles.. Im not convinced it is all for the 'Right reasons'! I am sure local government will think it is just a way to raise revenue.. like London ULEZ... Im sure it does help reduce pollution a bit.. but I am also sure it puts a lot of ££ into the London money pot??

I'm not sure if it is up and running yet but yo also have the likes of Nottinghams 'Eco-Express' route?

I can only see more of this happening? It kind of makes sense. Ans even if it does not, I can only assume that the Main UK political parties will jump on this Eco Band wagon to stop votes being lost to the Green Party??!!

I am quite keen to at the very least explore the idea to its fullest...

For me its a personal love of Land rovers and a practical desire to have a great vehicle for my job. I dont do massive miles, some is on rough tracks and we live on top of a hill which, without 4x4 capability is inaccessible in the snow.

My biggest expenditure is that of transport.. ie fuel, servicing,Road tax and repairs..
IF I can reduce those costs profits can increase... and I can feel that I am at least doing a small something to help the planet.

In regards to the vehicle value... I personally feel the exact opposite... If I buy a Disco3/4 with a knackered engine. the value is almost at scrap level... With GOOD a fully working Electric conversion I would imaging the value being above that of the equivalent fossil powered LR.
I am basing this on the fact that 'pre-owned' cost of an electric vehicle is almost always above that of the diesel or petrol powered ones. Currently the LOWEST depreciating cars in the marketplace are Electric and Hybrid vehicles... I can only see demand increasing over the next 10-20 years...

Unless Hydrogen cells make an impact...

Battery technology is moving on at a reasonable pace.. and I can forsee 'Inductive charging' (Ie charge while you drive) and the likes of Graphene 'Supercapacitors' being used for ultra rapid (ie Empty to full charge in 10 mins) becoming more usable and less expensive..

I tried to get my 101 registered as dual fuel sent all info as requested but in the end compter says no...no option on vehicle so couldnt do it
 It is better to have and not need it then need and not have it.

I looked at this a while ago.. but it did depend on the age of the vehicle... It might been possible to become a Q reg special/one off so as you avoided homologation/type approval...

But even that may not have given you a road tax reduction..

Here is the current 'mainstream' overview from DVLA..

Before you start
For cars registered before 1 March 2001 the rate of vehicle tax depends on its engine size.

The rate for cars registered on or after 1 March 2001 depends on CO2 emissions and fuel type. They’ll be taxed using the old system if this information is not available.

Vehicle tax rates for cars, motorcycles, light goods vehicles and trades licences are also shown in the vehicle tax rate tables.

I bet if it went the other way from a vehicle owing no or very little tax converted in to one in a high tax bracket HMRC would be all over it in minutes with a road tax demand/reminder dropping on to the mat the next morning.....
