Emission warning light - advice requested.
We are on holiday in Austria at this moment with our disco 4 graphite and this afternoon, this warning light appeared:
According to our handbook, it means there is some sort of emission problem. Can I continue our trip, towing a caravan, or should I try to find a Land Rover asap ? We are about 600 miles from home.
Advice highly appreciated.

Hi Paul, It would help greatly if you filled in the profile section.. .this would tell us what car you have, the engine, the year etc.. much easier to give advice with that information I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

I'll do that but at this moment, it doesn't work as the internet connection overhere in the Alps is terrible.
Anyway, I need to know urgently if I can leave the campside tomorrow (as planned) without the risk of a break down driving on small roads pulling a caravan. 😳

I would get the fault codes read to make an informed decision. It could be all sorts some may turn into restricted performance! Not sure you need that pulling a caravan. It is not an emmissions warning light per se and covers all sorts including transmission issues. I suppose a lot depends on your breakdown cover as you may need them.

Thanks. So I'm afraid I'll have to find a workshop where they can read the codes. Is there any chance other than Land Rover dealers can do this ? The nearerst one overhere is quite far away so during driving to them maybe the "reduced performance" could occur. Even without caravan, not a pleasant experience. Are mobile breakdown services equipped to examine fault codes on Land Rovers ?

Yes, a quality system will read the codes. SnapOn, Autel many similar, most modern garages will have a code reader.Richard

Try a hard reset, disconnect both battery leads and touch them together for a few seconds, do not touch the battery terminals when doing this it may just clear it.
The good thing is it’s amber(warning) not red(stop), it maybe the catalist doing it’s routine burn out and it’s got overheated, hot weather lots of hills towing a caravan.
Is there any noticeable loss in power?
Is there excessive smoke out of the exhaust when pulling hard?
Is there a swooshing noise when pulling hard?
It could be a cracked turbo pipe or worst case the dreaded cracked inlet manifold.It can when others can't,

The warning light came on while we drove on a mountain pass so the engine was indeed very hot. (but not overheating) so your comment about regeneration could indeed be the cause.
If I do this reset of the leads, will this cause any loss of important information ?
There was no loss of power.

No, none whatsoever it will just clear all present fault codes which will be an advantage if you still need to have your codes read, you may lose you clock settings, to confirm this is the battery leads only after they have both been disconnected from the battery, you may need something metallic to make them reach each other, wait until the park brake has gone out before disconnecting is best It can when others can't,

Thanks ! I just made the reset but it didn't help. Early this morning I contacted my assurance company and I'm waiting for a call from the recovery service now...

After 5 hours, the breakdown service finally arrived. Reading the fault code, it is indeed the catalyst. The lamp no longer lights up now but I have to go for a ride to check if it stays that way.

I chose a mountain road to make the test. Not too steap but the road climbed steadily over many km. Total length: 30 mls.
The warning light remained off over the whole distance so I hope the problem is solved and hopefully the regeneration process of the cat has been (to a large extent ?) succesfull.
Tomorrow, we'll drive to another campsite, about 40 mls away. With the caravan, that is. I am confident that it will succeed. Let's hope I'm right...

Update: (following day) during the trip with caravan, no more warning lights. 👍
