I think that is the thing to do, boost your confidence again.
Get the left front on a axel stand. Remove wheel.
Are there heatshields at the rear of the arch. If so remove them. Carefully mark how the heatshield fit together as this is the worse part of the rebuild if you haven't done that (not that they are important)
Locate the turbo, and undo the pipes at run to the front. (one plastic one metal). See if the rag is there.
May require a mirror and torch to see into the turbo
After the turbo the pipes goes to the front in a metal pipe and into the intercooler. That's quite easy to access at the front of the wheel arch, if required. (could be bits of rag there)

Hi Daz, I use an endoscope in my work. Good for looking into pipes without taking things off.
I think if the rag had got to the turbo it would not run. Hope you get sorted.
Hi
Got something similar to that was also good to check inside the chassis after steam cleaning it and then ensuring the coverage was good spraying the Dinitrol inside

Endoscope is arriving tomorrow, I haven’t had the turbo inlet pipe off yet no, what I read this was a real PITA, what with my confidence knock I’m not sure id be willing to attempt it.
I will check with endoscope tomorrow if it’s within pipe I will try and fish out with wire hanger, if it’s in turbo with the garage being able to get to the inlet pipe through wheel arch or are they likely to say it’s a body off job just so I know?
Hi
Ur find it very useful as well for other jobs
Might be very lucky if u can at least see it by grabbing it with a coat hanger , plus the endoscope should come with little attachments including a very small hook
Please let us now how u get on , u will indeed build ur confidence up over time , little at a time
Don’t mind admitting when I bought mine I thought oh blimey but with the awesome help from the forum I done more and more jobs with there knowledge in how to do them

Ref that aluminium cover if it needs to be removed is just 3 x bolts, theres a bolt not in the pic thats top left hand corner
The jubilee clamp , middle of the picture , with the black circle is the one that clamps onto the turbo
Fingers crossed won’t need to remove it but just in case
As others have said, ensure u use axle stands , put suspension into off road road and pull fuse F26 in the engine bay or remove both battery leads to prevent any possibility of the suspension from moving

Not a brilliant pic but shows the horizontal air inlet pipe that goes onto the turbo

Hi all
So the endoscope has arrived and is on charge, this is going to be my task for the next day or so.
Will update further once I know more.
Question though - if there is not sign of rag in hose before turbo, what’s a telltale sign it’s gone through turbo or would this not be possible?
I.e if it’s not in hose and no sign it’s gone through turbo am I looking at another issue?
Thanks

You perhaps need to remind us of the actual problem ? I skim read the thread and it’s starts with you stating that a rag was left in the pipe.
If there is no evidence of rag, does it run ok or have you got an issue?

The actual problem is;
Started off doing a gearbox sump change and took the air hose off by the coolant tank for DIY flush,
Then put everything back together and notice it was smoky at the exhaust and sucking for air. When looking under the bonnet the hose that connected onto the engine by the air filter box was flattening and the engine sounded it was sucking for air.
I took this hose off so the engine was sucking air straight from atmosphere ( removing flatting hose) and the car stopped sucking for air and seemed okay.
I or my dad don’t recall removing the rag so we can only assume that’s the cause.
No issue with car prior to any works.

The rag will be stuck in the end of the plastic pipe before it has reached the turboMy D3 Build Thread
