Thinking about getting a Discovery... |
|
Hey everyone,
Like i say i'm looking for a 7 seater 4x4 and from what's available one of prefered options is a Discovery. Now, i'd like to keep running cost as cheap as i can when choosing which version. Mpg ain't much of an issue as it will mostly be used to carry the kids to school and shopping etc. From what i can see most of the D3's seem to be £300 per year for road tax. Am i right in thinking all the D4's are £500 price bracket? Or are there certain models that are cheaper to tax?
Are the D4's worth paying the extra tax for or just i just save money and get a D3?
I'm posting this before looking round the forum so apologies if there are buying and comparison guides available i will look for something now.
I will more then likely use it to do some green laning etc on weekends and get some real use from it.
Thanks

To be fair if you want to keep running coats as low as possible then and D3/4 is probably not the car for you. They are big cars and heavy on wear all round, the items are not cheap either, tyres, ball joints etc
You can strike lucky and get a good one that doesn't need a lot of work, but even servicing can work out expensive MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange
MY15 D4 HSE Kaikoura Stone
MY12 D4 HSE Nara Bronze Sold and gone
MY11 D4 HSE Stornaway Grey Sold and gone
D3 S spec Silver Sold and gone
Tow bar, full length roof bars, side steps, tow bar storage unit, surround camers.

Model/version wont make any difference to running costs, it will be high simple as.
Even the higher rate tax only works out at a fiver extra per week over the lower rate versions.
Short runs dont do the battery ant favours never mind the rest of the car.
Man maths says to buy one, most peoples wallets say otherwise

It started a little earlier than that with all of the final facelift cars having the lower road fund licence payment - September 2014 onwards.
As everyone appears to be saying, while the car in one of the very best 7 seaters out there (THE best, as far as I’m concerned!) and is worth every penny, there’s still no such thing as a cheap one
Mind you, I’m not aware of any genuine 7 seater that’s cheap to own (there are plenty of pretend 5+2’s out there that might be, but they tend to be very stupid) and I’d pay the extra, to have a D3/4, any day.
What sort of budget do you have in mind? 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
2015 - 2017: 2 x D4
2017 to date: FFRR SDV8
2023 to date: FL2 as a second car
2021 to date: Hinckley built ‘14 Triumph Trophy 1200
2022 to date: Hinckley built ‘14 Triumph Trophy 1200 & sidecar!
(One of only two known to exist in the world!)

Discovery 3 or 4 from 2006 to 2014 are the £520 tax models. But to be honest the extra £20 a month compared to the £300 models is the least of your worries when running one of these.

Whenever someone mentions that they want cheap running costs in the same sentence as buying a discovery, I wince a bit! Unfortunately these really aren't cars to buy if you're on any sort of budget, they're expensive beasts to run, they munch through fuel, they require preventative maintenance to keep them going and parts/labour is expensive on them, and if as and when they do fail they cost a fortune to fix.

IF you can do a lot of the work on them yourself and/or have VERY GOOD (Disco Micky) local Land Rover expert that will help, however Discos are very Expensive to run on an overall pence per mile basis.
By way of example... In the last 2 months:
Mrs G_cam Disco Developed a suspension fault .. NOT an unusual fault
I rebuilt the valve blocks, installed new height sensors, found and fixed faulty wiring, replaced the air tank and the suspension compressor and relay:
Cost for me to do was around £450 for the parts alone. I have my own diagnostic (GAP iid Unit like many of us do now).
If it want into a main dealer I would have guessed around £2k vs Good independent at around £1k-1.2k. This would cover parts. time, diagnostics and re-programming! (Anyone please feel free to correct my guesstimates)
These are very capable vehicles but cheap running is not an option EVER!
I just don't want you to buy one and regret it when you are faced with the first challenge/fault/big bill...
You have made a right first move by joining the Forum.... 1 TR6 Rusting away quietly
1 FARR UTV SOLD
1 International Harvester SOLD
7 x D3 all SOLD
2 x D4 both SOLD
1 x Mrs D4 'Panther' SOLD
1 x Outlander van SOLD
1 continual stream of car parts and me living in the garage...
