Hey guys iam new to this forum and this is my first post, I have always been a land cruiser man and have drove my automatic 1hd fte land cruiser as manual and done engine braking which is really effective in it, recently I drove my mates LR4 and I think it's the best vechile that I have ever drove, now that iam planning to buy a 2012 LR4 my query is how effective is engine braking and is it ok to drive the LR4 in manual mode, and if anyone of u have moved from land cruiser to LR4 can u share yr experience, thanx and hoping for yr help.

I haven't switched from a land cruiser but on the D4 (or D3) the engine braking is great on the auto box when used in manual mode. It works fantastically off road too so you have the option of all auto with the traction control settings and hill descent or just using the manual option. Which is nice

Thanx RichardB I really appreciate your help and want to know more about the engine braking like for eg. Is it ok to apply engine braking while the vechile is moving in high speed to support the brake, does engine braking affect the engine in LR4 iam asking this coz I used to do engine braking in my LC 100 and it's really very effective and it does not affect he engine, I have very less knowledge about the LR4 so iam bit curious to know if it's worth shifting from LC to LR. How durable and reliable are these LRs? Thanx.

When you are in high range sports mode the box will only allow you to drop down the gears if the engine speed matches the parameters set out ....this is to prevent any potential damage to the box ...so if you are coming off on a slip road and you manually drop from 5th to 4th to 3rd it will use engine braking provided the road speed matches the required rev threshold for that gear. But if you tried to drop it from 5th straight down to 2nd at 60 mph then it ain't going to happen ...it will only hold at the nearest appropriate gear.
Equally if you went up the box manually in high range sports mode it will only go to the max revs for that gear and if you keep on accelerating it will change up.
By contrast ..in low range manual mode then it will hold the respective gear right up to the rev limiter whether going up or down the box  21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Yup, I can confirm the engine braking is great in the D4. I've gone from several Audi Quattros like the 4.2lt V8 S4 with a manual box (and I drove it, not chaffeuring it in Driving Miss Daisy mode  ) , over to a D4 Auto and I've driven the D4 quite sportily and I can vouch that the engine braking is very good.
You won't regret it

i use engine braking as a matter of course everyday on normal roads for the last 4 years. no trouble, very reliable car. used engine braking all day in an offroad park with very steep inclines, no probs. There's one wheel on my wagon, but i'm still rollin' along, it's the cherokee, they're after me, but I'm singing a happy song

engine braking is great.
unlike a lot of cars that will change up a gear automatically as you roll down a steep hill, both the D3 and D4 will hold the gear and use engine braking - its only when you apply some power that the gearbox will change up a gear. that makes it great offroad when the last thing you want is to change up Duncan

Also,
when in low offroad if you feel you are decending too fast (maybe you are in 3rd low) you can use command shift and pop it into a lower gear to reduce your speed without the runaway issue of a clutch gear change
HDC is still there in the background, but normally overruled by good gear selection.
engine braking not an issue there is plenty to spare. It is better to have and not need it then need and not have it.
