Mine works from cold. It becomes a pita when you've run the engine, and have to wait for it to decide its ready to give you a level.
I completely agree that its an unfortunate situation that more thought was not given to the process, a startup indication would be ideal, and yes it would also be ideal if it warned you before it blew itself to pieces!
However, I also agree that my wife would never check the oil until it shouted at her. If it had a dipstick, it would never get checked.

With tyre pressure monitoring(TPM) it done automatically on start up, tells you what pressures are set at and a warning with a picture if one or more tyres are low and which ones, for oil which is vital nothing- I rest my case It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

No fancy TPMS on mine, just me, the tyre pressure gauge and my trusty Honda compressor.

There is a tube there, that’s the one that is leaking on mine but I doubt you could get anything down it as according to the drawing it has some very sharp bends in it, I will investigate further. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

It's not something I'd want to risk, these lumps are temperamental enough as is, they're not going to like being poked with a stick.
