Engine failure 3 months after turbo replacement
I had both turbos replaced in my 2010 D4 around three months ago at significant expense.
Everything seemed to be running smoothly until last week after a two-hour drive the engine started to make a loud ticking/knocking noise. The recovery chap thought it was an injector valve at the time.
It's been recovered to the same independent garage that replaced the turbos and they say that the engine reports 4.6l of oil but the bottom of the engine has no oil in it so they think the oil pump might have failed and it's a complete engine replacement job
Are they likely to be right? Could they have fitted the oil filter incorrectly after the turbo replacement causing this to happen as I think is suggested on some other threads?
Would appreciate any thoughts, if it's an engine rebuild job I think unfortunately it's off to WeBuyAnyCar!!!

Really sorry to hear this.... who did the work & what mileage are you at?
Did you check oil levels regularly after the turbo replacement? Was there any fluctuation or oil loss with the new turbos?A mod a week until I have nothing to improve or add.

It was done by a Land Rover Specialist here in West Sussex.
I did check it occasionally via the MFD and always seemed to be at a good level (and still showed as OK when it happened).
I can't get my head around why there wasn't any warning.
Did have a quote from a recon specialist this evening for £5k (vs £8k quoted by dealer). But do I really want to spend that now it's 11 years old with 195,000k...

The engine doesn't report oil levels
Presumably they have drained and measured the oil that came out?

how can an oil filter be fitted incorrectly. i am worried now as i do my own oil changes .i used to do them on my old 2.7 that i remember something about putting the filter into the housing in a certain position so a part on the filter located correctly but as far as i could find out on the sdv6 the filter was just fitted to the lid and screwed in .have i done something wrong
@beerbelly No the D4 3ltr has no pin on the oil filter to locate, only the 2.7 engine has that.

Were they genuine turbos, or recon ones etc? Did they change the oil during the turbo change? Its lost a fair bit of oil in 3 months if it was full with 5.9l.
What sort of mileage have you done in 3 months?

Thank you everyone.
I've decided to scrap the Disco (reluctantly), I just can't justify the 5k engine cost on a 10k vehicle that is only going to start costing me more as it gets older.
They were genuine turbos (eek, looking at the bill just one turbo cost more than I'm getting in scrap!) and it looks like an oil change was done. Mileage was minimal, maybe a couple of thousand.
Strip it and sell the parts on here? DSL will tell you it has a therapeutic element but should certainly return more than scrap value..

What’s the scrap in value? Have you tried ringing around a few garages to see if anyone wants to buy it? I think Discovery Doctors buy and repair broken D3 / D4s.

It does indeed have therapeutic value. Plus the value of the pile of parts. All you need is time, but of space and a bit of organisation, ideal for the next lockdown.

I ended up getting 1k for it (couple of garages only offered me £200). I reckon it was probably worth 2/3k to someone but I wasn't able to find that person!
I think the therapeutic part for me was getting rid of the stress! If it wasn't for work/children commitments then I would have been totally up for stripping it. Life just seems so busy now, time is a premium for sure.
I've replaced it with a Volvo...! Will miss it for sure.
