The screw is a normal threat - loosen counter clockwise.
After pulling out the crankshaft i have seen the reason why there were metal shavings in the oil filter:
There are two main bearings damaged but only one crankshaft journal is worn out.

Hi, I think you are right going for the 2nd engine. The hidden damage on this engine may appear later. When you find metal shavings in the filter they will also be in the hidden oil-ways, difficult to get out. The camshaft lobes may also have turned when the valves hit the piston. Thanks for the great write up. Are you working alone? that's a lot of work you have put in.

I am working alone, but sometimes my neighbor helps me mastering difficult situations.
But that is my hobby and i spend a lot of time with a smile on my face
One year ago i have had a Porsche 996 with the catastrophic M96.03 engine.
This car i bought with engine failure too.
I like that

Ok. These bearings are really destroyed
A short off topic picture:
The M96.03 porsche engine after fatal engine failure.
So i am happy that my engine now only got a few bearings worn.
Today i will check the other components

Today i cleaned up the oil pan, the engine block and the cylinder head with cold cleaner and after this i used a high pressure cleaner to rinse out the dirt.
Now it looks great:
Tomorrow a friend of mine will check the crankshaft and the rods if they are damaged.
After inspecting all parts i decide if i rebuild the engine or get an other.
Unfortenatly i can't have a look in the new one, so i am not sure that this engine is in a good condition.

You could make a nice little coffee table from that block. Although, V8, 10, or 12 would be better ...

Today i get the grinded crankshaft from the engine builder.
Although he proofed the injectors and the turbos.
The injectors are all right. One of the turbos is damaged so i will get a new one.
All parts are on the way so i hope to get the engine in next week.
The only problem is to get the new piston rings 2. generation.
But today i found an alternative with similar specs.

Update:
After cleaning all parts, searching for new piston rings 2. generation, assembling the engine and try to find out where all the vacuum hoses and plugs belong to - i put in the engine today:

I hope too.
It was a lot of work and sometimes i asked me what the builders thought about doing the construction as it is.
What is the reason for putting the oil filter behind the oil pump and at the top of the engine so that the oil can flow back?
So the oil pressure is not immediately available at the bearings?
