Engine 'Hunting'/Revs dropping
Hi all,
My disco 4 seems to have a problem, where you'll be driving along and the revs will suddenly 'surge', it'll sort of feel like it's selected the wrong gear even though no gear change is required (hard to describe), this has only happened about 8-10 times in 2-3k miles, it's also cut out once, and just now it was 'surging' or 'hunting' while it was idling (this hasn't happened before), it was idling perfectly then the revs would drop quickly and then back to perfect idle. The symptoms all seem related/similar.
I'll be ringing the warranty company tomorrow as I've only had the car a couple of weeks, but would really appreciate any info on here if people have any idea what the problem could be?

Sounds Like an injector fault

OK thanks, if that's the case I assume it'll throw up a fault code?

Perhaps an engine sensor issue, such as the oil temp sensor.
Live data would help.

Yeah, I suppose it's impossible to diagnose properly on a forum and it'll need to be plugged in, I just thought I'd ask in case someone else had had exactly the same problem!

The oil temp sensor causing erratic idle is pretty common and cheap to fix. It can be other things but the oil sensor is easily the most frequent cause.

Just to add to this, I've had the engine management light (amber) come on a couple of times now, it's booked in to be diagnosed on Friday, I'll report back with whatever they find.

I had the same fault on a Mercedes truck last week !!
Turned out it was the crank sensor picking up a extra mark on the flywheel which incidentally was at BDC !
So the sensor was trying to initiate injection at BDC not TDC !

It's thrown up a crank sensor fault, booked in on Tuesday to have it replaced.

So apparently the crank sensor is a common problem, and a huge job! The gearbox needs to be removed, and LR have upgraded the part as so many of them were failing, it's at least a day's labour possibly more as well as over £400 for the parts. Ouch.

So this is still going on, and on. As I've only had the car a matter of weeks I'm struggling to remain positive. The crank sensor is apparently on back-order, so the garage can't get hold of one, meaning I'm left with a car that I can't use. The dealer I bought it from have been pretty good in that they've said they'll pay for the work etc, but it seems that everyone's hands are tied, and I'm left with a car that isn't fit for purpose

So, after being without the car for a week as it's been in the garage while they battle with the crank sensor, it's now back and hopefully fixed. The bill is likely to be around £1000, though fortunately that's not my problem as the supplying dealer is paying for it.
It's not been the best of starts to LR ownership, or indeed 'expensive car' ownership, as in my 20 years of driving sub £6k cars I've never had a problem that has been so difficult, time consuming and expensive to fix, but onwards and upwards, I'm hopeful that it's purely bad luck and I'll have a much better experience here on in!

Yep, it's been perfect since the crank sensor was changed
