Engine louder after the enhancement , and a diesel spill !

Chaps,

Rather than add this to the other posts that mention the car being a tad louder after the enhancement, I though to separate it out .. for the following reason.

My D3 has had a 25 day holiday at the dealers to ..

1) Fix the red lighting SRS system
2) Fix water ingress at the back hatch
3) Have the s/w enhancement done.

When I got it back, the service manager told me that during the first test drive , a fuel pipe had “come off” and put a lot of diesel around the engine bay. The long holiday was to make sure all was well and that no puddles of diesel were left, and also that the engine bay wiring loom had had to be replaced ….. Whatever …

Anyway, the car is in my opinion louder, i.e., the starter sounds louder, and the engines noise my very much more noticeable.

Having taken the car back and having a moan, they confirm that all is as it should, and there isn’t much more that can be done, or indeed, nothing they have done will have made it any “louder” ..

But .. and this is something I need someone who may have been poking around .. If the engine bay had had a load of diesel spilled around it, is there any in-accessible “padding” etc that if remove could make it louder at the front end. I.e... if it got soaked in diesel, could some padding have been binned and not replaced ????
I think it sounds much louder than even the brand new load D3 I had was well..

Grabbing at straws, but as I say, I don’t really know what I’m looking for?

Cheers

Without knowing more about the nature of the spill, it is certainly true that "damp" insulating material will be far less effective than dry material.

If it was water, then it would dry out. As it's diesel, if the insulation has been impregranted, then there is no alternative but to replace it.

The biggest tell tale would be a whiff of middle distillate.....is that what you get?

Well, not really. I can't see any evidence that anything nasty has actually gone on. I'm just taking the dealers word for it. No odd smells etc. I might have the oppertunity to get it up on a ramp in the next week or two, but not really sure that will let me see enough of the engine bay from that angle.

Its the loudness of the starter thats bugging me, and which makes me thing some of the sound padding isn't where it should be.

Thanks for the reply though.

In the latest s/w update landrover has altered injection timing to reduce the effects of turbo-lag. This has resulted in increased diesel 'knock' and was something that a few of my early TC customers commented on.

Make sure all the insulation is in place and if it is then I suspect your engine noise is there to stay.

Adam, did you find my car was quieter than yours when we went to the Peaks last week? I have had the enhancement long ago, and am not sure about the extra noise.

I have always put any extra noise down to the high miles I do, now on 56k and still think its a very refined motor.

Post enhancement, mine is no different. A round trip to Stathspey last week demonstrated, again, that it is indeed a very refined vehicle.

Bare in mind, though, that no machine will be as good as it ages as a new one. Wear is ongoing, and small changes in components that do wear can result in increased incidence of noise, vibration and other mechanical feedback.

Fuel type will also add to the noise / less noise mix.

Mine is noisier post enhancement but I would not claim it as noisy. Slightly different but still a very quiet engine considering its size and job off pulling the D3 about.

Prefer the extra zip and response be there than the very slight, occasionally to be heard noise increase.

Allways difficult from the passenger seat (again, thanks), but no - could not really tell a difference - mine just seems 'harsher' than pre-enhancement - suspension, engine noise - but no lesser a car for it - drove to Uxbridge and back yesterday 400 mile round trip - 4.00 am start and back in Cheadle at 18.00, non stop both ways, relaxing journey despite usual M6 friday nightmare. As long as enhancement improves reliability I am happy D3 driver

Mine is slightly 'rougher' but not anywhere near the usual diesel noise you'd get from an equivalent sized engine.

Still a damn fine motor but is sensitive to 'cheap' fuel when compared to a fill up or two on one of the premium diesels.

'cheap' fuel - actually paid less than 90p a litre today
