Engine noise - opinions please

I've just done a trip to Edinburgh and back, 7 up, with luggage. Cruising at 80 ish. The car has been driving perfectly, normal power and fuel consumption 24 mpg for the trip.

When I dropped off the passengers at their houses this evening, I got out of the car to open the boot, leaving the engine running. I immediately noticed that the engine note was a little harsh, and there was a distinct clattering/rattling noise.

Its too late and dark for a good look now, but has anyone got a pointer for me to check out?

hi, just a thought but mine clatters a little louder on different brands of fuel and also if the outside temp drops. hope this is of use to you, mine just sounds louder on some days and then really quiet on other days so start it tomorow and see what it sounds like. hopefully its just playing tricks on your ears like mine does. Thumbs Up

Does it sound any different in the cabin? ...or the way it drives through the range ? I find that the engine sound \ note can vary outside of the vehicle due to the acoustics created in the near environment ...if you know what I mean ? Confused

Mine is also harsher and quite noticeably clattery these days Gareth.....strngely after the LRA bloke fiddled about yesterday it is now quieter and smoother again (well was yesterday anyway)..........not sure whether it was something to do with my failed EGR valve?? ( Pure hypothesis )

Car is normlly run on "Premium" diesel.
end of an era ....... maybe a Defender when it appears.......

Mine also can sound a little louder on occasions then quiet again on other days.

As j,moore says, it could well be differing fuel types and outside temperature.

After initial paranoia and driving along with the radio turned down and opening of windows I have accepted it as a diesel thing. (This is my first diesel vehicle).

Just had 45,000 mile service last week and nothing showed up there. (£330.00 all in at GS Wakefield by the way, excellent service too).

Mine seems to make different noises on different days too. Sometimes it sounds smooth and gruff and other times pretty clattery but it always seems to drive the same. I just put it down to LR character!

Definitely a diesel thing. My Alfa JTD had similar characteristics; one day as smooth as silk and another it would be rattling like a bolt in a tin can. Both my Discos have done this
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

She's OK now Thumbs Up

There was a definite cause, the plastic cover on top of the engine was loose. It just pushes down onto rubber lugs, and I must have dislodged it when checking the oil at the weekend.

Sounds purrrrr..... fect once again 8)
